Rose and Fred

My daughter is nearly 2 and called Rose (Rosie)

Our next baby arrives in December and we wanted to call him Fred.

The unpleasant association didn't cross our minds until we shared the idea with a few friends but now it feels wrong to keep Fred as it stands as an option. So we are considering Wilfred.

Thoughts? Still too close to Fred? Too old fashioned?

Thanks everyone

WEST

that was my first thought.

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 11/08/2012 22:34

Another one thinking it was a joke too.

upsandowns · 11/08/2012 22:34

Ok thanks guys Fred is a no then but what about Wilfred (shortened to Wilf)

I didn't think the thread was a wind up but I wondered if the OP wanted to know if other people would make the connection IF she didn't mention it.

(They will OP, sorry).

Greythorne · 11/08/2012 22:35

I thought of Fred West at once.

I def would not.

HistoryNerd · 11/08/2012 22:36

Nonononono

Don't do that. Don't.

Leftwingharpie · 11/08/2012 22:36

I thought this was a follow up to the Myra thread.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 11/08/2012 22:37

Oh no!

Sorry it's immediate. So much so I thought you must be taking the piss!

4boyzmum · 11/08/2012 22:38

Yep, my first thought was Fred and Rose West too. Its a shame cos theyre lovely names. Each on their own would be fine but together it's a bit 'murdery'!

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 11/08/2012 22:39

Wahaaa a bit murdery!

cheeseandmushroomtoastie · 11/08/2012 22:40

Don't do it, sounds wrong Sad

Rose is lovely though.

donnie · 11/08/2012 22:41

Seriously? As a rule it's a good idea not to name your kids after mass rapists and murderers.

upsandowns · 11/08/2012 22:44

Donne the question was actually is Wilfred too close.

MrGeresHamster · 11/08/2012 22:46

I don't think Wilfred would work either. You don't get to choose nicknames once they get to school and you can guarantee it'll happen...

Gooshka · 11/08/2012 22:46

It was the first thought that crossed my mind to be honest Sad

TiggerWearsATriteSmile · 11/08/2012 22:50

Wilfred = weed.
Wilfred = weed.
Wilfred = weed.

Dont name your child weed.
Wilf is worse.

Try again.

Ham69 · 11/08/2012 22:52

I made firework like noises when I read the thread. Thought 'Aahh' about the names, then 'Ooh' when I made West realisation. So Fred definite no no. But when I realised you meant Wilfred, I wondered why you mention the name Fred. Love the name Wilfred and Wilf is the obvious nn choice to me. So, yes, Rose and Wilf would be great.

Northernlurker · 11/08/2012 22:54

Wilfred is the name of the mouse in Brambly Hedge. Not good.

Fred and Rose is awful unfortuantely because yes, it was the first thing that came to mind for me too.

What about:

Walter
or
Ted

Isn't there a Wilf in the Biff and Chip books? I may just be having a moment there though...

BustersOfDoom · 11/08/2012 23:02

Just no.

As a parent you think you can influence the nickname or shortened version of your DC's name. But you can't for very long. If you insist he should be called Wilf and the whole of his class call him Fred then you aren't going to be able to change that. I speak from experience. My DS is known to everyone by the shortened version of his name we refused to acknowledge when he was little. He likes it and that's good enough for me but fortunately there are no links to a serial killer with his name.

And to be honest I really don't like Wilfred. It's just far too old fashioned for me.

TiggerWearsATriteSmile · 11/08/2012 23:06

Walter? Really. Stop now .

Edward is good with NN Ted.

Kaluki · 11/08/2012 23:12

Oh no not Fred and definitely not Wilfred.
How about Jim....
Grin

xmasevebundle · 12/08/2012 01:13

I like the name rose and fred alot.

Im 19(i read from ted bundy to jeff dahmers i love serial killer books and how someone can kill another its just very f*cked up lol)

I dont think most kids will no who Rose and Fred West are.

But Wilfred is nice, either way people will hate or love it. I love old fashioned name on boys its nice to hear it.

PedanticPanda · 12/08/2012 01:21

I thought that before I even opened the thread, avoid Fred. I think Wilfred is too close too.
