Spanish boy names

My partner is Spanish and therefor we've agreed to give our first child a Spanish name as he's surname will be English. I'm not that familiar with them, unfortunately..

Top of the list so far are these three, while they sound quite exotic when pronounced in Spanish, in English they feel a bit boring - standard?

  1. León
  2. Nicolás
  3. Mateo

Looking for Spanish names that are perhaps more unique but pronounceable in English?

I work with a spaniard called Antonio which is quite nice and very pronounceable

Sastra · 02/08/2012 17:13

I love Xabier/ Jabier nn Xabi!

At times like this I always suggest Inigo.

Well known name, established but rare in English (e.g. 17th-century architect Inigo Jones), cool because of The Princess Bride.

I like your list, especially Leon.

How about:
Esteban (Spanish for Sebastian)
Andres
Diego
Antonio/Anton
Gabriel
Flavio
Guillermo
Pablo
Miguel
Rafael
Tomas

Good luck!

Esteban is a Spanish variant of Stephen.

MagdalenaAlec · 02/08/2012 17:43

that is right badtime - for some reason I was convinced it was Sebastian Blush

Lots of great Spanish names and due to the popularity of Spanish football people are much more familiar with the names and how to pronounce them!

MadRambler · 02/08/2012 19:21

Be careful with some names, everyone here (in Spain) seems to be called Antonio (DH included) or Javier, for example.

I love Gabriel (pronounced like Gabrielle, the singer, in Spanish) and it would have been my daughter's name had she been a boy. I must admit, we struggled with male names and I was very glad we found out we were having a girl.

Gugglebum · 02/08/2012 21:28

I love Mateo. He can go by Mat or by Teo or his whole name. And a PP beat me to it, but I also vote for Inigo. :)

BikeRaceRunningRaceNoSkiing · 02/08/2012 21:30

Jesus, go on....

But I really like Mateo.

I like Santiago, I vaguely know one, known as Santi, and I always think what a nice name it is when I hear it.

AThingInYourLife · 04/08/2012 19:36

Mateo is cool.

sayanythingrogerjustrogerme · 04/08/2012 19:45

I have a Raphael, so I can't think what could possibly work better than Rafael in your case Wink. Mateo is very nice too, although it sounds more Italian to my ears than Spanish.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 04/08/2012 22:13

Mateo is cool but also the name of the shagabout waiter in Benidorm.
Love Gabriel, also Paco (Francisco) and Federico.

dinkystinky · 04/08/2012 22:16

Agree with Rafael and Gabriel

anthonys · 06/08/2012 12:11

Thanks for all the suggestions; good to get some feedback on our list too. Inigo is something a bit different but as it's Basque my partner thinks it'd be a bit odd.. I also quite liked Alejo, Xabi, Santiago, Rafael and Jordi. Just need to narrow it down a bit before the birth now!
