I've finished with 3 dcs so this is hypothetical for me. i've just been reading a book about a girl called Dora and genuinely thought what a lovely name... untill a little cartoon popped into my head singing 'find the map'.

what other lovely names have been spoilt for you?

Made me pmsl!!! My fil & bil are Ralph & it'll be the middle name of our 2nd son due in Nov - now I'm remembering my teenage reading highlights and tittering to myself in the bath!!!

pookamoo · 07/08/2012 22:35

Willow = Buffy the Vampire Slayer for me.
I like the name a lot and it would have complemented DD1's "tree" name also for DD2 but I couldn't shake Alysson Hannigan from my mind!

BlueChampagne · 08/08/2012 13:43

I think Blair has had it for a wee while!

Gunznroses · 08/08/2012 19:11

havent read the whole thread but.....

"Blair" or Blaire - thats the name of the girl Excorcist!!!! NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!

hzgreen · 08/08/2012 19:29

we were going to have Ophelia for our girl until my sister said that people would put "tits" after it Blush

Gunznroses · 09/08/2012 18:43

I would never had thought that, and i don't think most people would, so your dsis clearly has a "strange" for want of a better word, mind.

hzgreen · 09/08/2012 19:18

sadly it's in my head now. in my sisters defence she didn't come up with it herself - her ex husband and his mate used to say it behind someones else back. some people are such charmers!

Gunznroses · 09/08/2012 19:49

A grown man saying "ophelia tits" behind someone's back ? How juvenile! No wonder why he is an ex.

RuthlessBaggage · 09/08/2012 19:54

I wanted Christian for DS2; DH vetoed; I am now sooooooo glad but would never tell him that.

clarabella1980 · 10/08/2012 10:11

Names of any high-profile missing/murdered kids - Maddie/Madeline, Milly etc.
Flora - I love it but my husband said "easily spreadable!" ;-)
Hermione - have always loved this as a name, since I was a kid (a long time before Harry Potter!) but it's far too heavily associated with the books/films now.

This teacher knows in advance to expect trouble from:

Connor, Callum, Kyle, Kaden, Jaydon, Braydon, Brandon, Brett, Rhys/Reece, Alfie, Ryan and oddly, Jack (which I think is a nice traditional name but they always seem to be little **s!)

And girls called Ellie, Lauren, Shannon, Ashleigh, Nicole and Charlotte (again a lovely name but have had bad luck with real life Charlottes).

thegreylady · 10/08/2012 17:37

I have a granddaughter named Madeleine who is exactly the same age as Madeleine McCann. Even her birthday is the same month so every year there are reminders. Our Mads is 9 now.

modifiedmum · 13/08/2012 11:51

Names like Riley, Kai, Ruby seem to bother me. No idea why!

threeleftfeet · 13/08/2012 12:04

I liked Kai till the Rooneys used it.

Nothing against the Rooneys (honestly!) just don't want my DC to have sleb / very popular names.

itsjustmeanon · 13/08/2012 12:36

I'm 13 weeks pregnant, and just starting to think of names. So many names are ruined by associations.

I love the name Meredith, but would not be able to use it, due to Kercher connection. Again, Imogen has been ruined by BB contestant.

Not posh enough to use Camilla, but I think Camilla is a beautiful name, but Camilla Park your Balls comes into my head.

thegingerone · 13/08/2012 17:21

I was pg with ds when Imogen was in bb but had already decided on it as our girl name. DH did wonder if it was a good idea in case every second girl was called it. ds obviously ended up with a diff name!

His little sister was born last year (even closer to all that court case stuff) but she's still called Imogen. It's the name we liked best and in a way it seems Ms Thomas may have done us a favour with regards the likelihood of Ims being one of four in her class!

Olivia is a name I couldn't use purely due to two girls in my class at school. Both were unbeliveably horrid to me. It's (probably) a gorgeous name. Loads of my friends have used it and their girls are lovely but I still struggle to remember to say I love it because I remember these two from my past!

MulberryMoon · 13/08/2012 19:42

Both of my dds have a very naughty Jake in their class, which puts me off it. I'm sure there are plenty of well behaved ones too.

narmada · 13/08/2012 20:50

Milo, Bruno and Theo are perfectly nice names but not ones I could ever contemplate after several years living in SW London and hearing them shouted across Richmond Park in braying tones.

I dunno whether people around here don't shout their girl children's names as much but I can't think of any that grate in the same way as the boys' ones above.

strugglingwiththepreteenbit · 14/08/2012 14:55

I teach in secondary. Jordans, Ethans and Charlies seem to draw attention to themselves. I can't think of any girls names that make me think uh-oh before I've met them.

downbythewater · 14/08/2012 18:02

I'm really Sad at all these people saying they wouldn't use Meredith after the tragic Meredith Kercher case. I have a Meredith and I only ever get compliments about her name. I would hate to think that's what they are really thinking.

5madthings · 14/08/2012 18:12

downby i love the name Meredith and it was on our list for a girl, i would never think of the meredith kercher connection! we opted for Merryn in the end :)

i liked the name Soren but on another forum we had a very horrible troll, really vile and her 'baby was called soren, only it turned otu she didnt have a baby at all! and that will always stick with me!

downbythewater · 14/08/2012 18:35

Thanks 5madthings! I think we have discussed Meredith/Merryn before (under different user name). I think Merryn is gorgeous!

floranora · 14/08/2012 18:44

Jacks do tend to be little buggers, loveable buggers. my DB is a jack and he was the apple of my mums eye, and the most naughty! he was a gorgeous kid, with white blonde hair and blue eye and the cheeky grin!

5madthings · 14/08/2012 18:47

no one worries about the link between jack the ripper and the name jack...?

i remember discussing meredith/merryn with somone on here, they are both lovely names :)
