Hi again all

We are doubting between Casper and Sven for DC1... Had really good and useful feedback on Casper but now wondering what you think of Sven.

We are not too worried about the football manager association - surely that is no longer a big deal? Sven has the advantage of unambiguous spelling.

What do you think?

Thanks again

Are you Swedish?

Wildwaterfalls · 31/07/2012 09:24

Scandinavian/Dutch couple living in Britain, making finding a suitable name rather challenging Smile.

Aha! Well I'm half Dutch Smile Caspar has always been on my list. I think it is infinitely more beautiful than Sven.

Wildwaterfalls · 31/07/2012 19:18

Thanks Badgerina!

Small bump... Any more views on Sven v Casper?

My husband and I are Scandos living in Canada.
I like both names. I also like Sten.
No negative associations (football manager or otherwise) to be worried about imo.
Good luck!!! Finding names that work in multiple languages is soooo hard so congrats on having a short list!!!!
Since you guys are scando as well...what do you think of my girl names (we're Estonian & Finish):
Heili (sounds like Hailey), Lia, Amelia, Klara, Kaia (sounds like KY-a)?

NiceViper · 31/07/2012 19:27

I'd prefer Caspar, which I think is a lovely name! I think the foot manager association might still be rather too strong.

Lannie33: from your list I'd go for Amelia nn Lia, or Klara.

WetAugust · 31/07/2012 19:27

I like Sven - it's what I called my car. (but don't let that put you off, it's a great name)

AndWhenYouGetThere · 31/07/2012 19:29

The Sv sounds is a bit odd in english - I'd go for Caspar/Casper every time.

Wildwaterfalls · 31/07/2012 19:31

Love those girls names Lannie, particularly Heili, Klara and Lia. Think Lia is my favourite, would pronounce it Lee-a, not sure if people over there would find that confusing.

We will go with a Dutch girls name so not much help to you, but in case it helps Astrid and Elise were on the short list for a long time.

Good luck!!

I like both Sven and Casper, but prefer Casper.

evamummy · 01/08/2012 07:39

I like Sven. It is quite popular in Germany as well. I agree about the unambiguouty ease of pronunciation of Sven in all languages.

Casper can be Kasper, Kaspar or Caspar.

skandi1 · 01/08/2012 07:52

Sven definitely!

My views are biased on the basis I went to school with a Caspar and he was really annoying.

honeytea · 01/08/2012 09:23

I like Caspar more than Sven, I do teach a boy called Sven and he is lovely!

coldcoffeeinthemorning · 01/08/2012 10:50

Casper is lovely, but does instantly make me think of the friendly ghost. I know a lovely swedish guy called Sven, so Sven gets my vote. I also liked the suggestion of Sten.

Lannie: I like Amelia most from your list, especially if you are living in Canada. Not to be pendantic, but Finland is not in Scandinavia, and Finnish names are very different to most Scandie names (with the exception of a few Swedish names in Finland) How about Kaija? Very similar to Kaia

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 01/08/2012 11:02

I think both names are nice but I prefer Sven..

PuffPants · 01/08/2012 11:04

Wasn't Caspar a little ghost? I think it's a bit of a wet name tbh.

Sven does make me think of the football one but I guess in your countries it's less uncommon and therefore doesn't have that connotation.

Wildwaterfalls · 01/08/2012 16:54

Thanks all, lots to think about Smile. Wasn't planning on doing the 'decide once the baby is born' thing but looks like that is where we might end up!

Ja till Sven! It sounds friendly and warm, whereas I find Casper sounds a little brittle, somehow. I know a young Sven who is a gorgeous and sunny teenager, and his name has never raised eyebrows or been problematic while growing up in England. Good luck!

MamaLazarou · 01/08/2012 19:01

Sven is an excellent name.

roteelefant · 01/08/2012 23:09

I have a lovely (german) cousin called Sven. He plays the french horn. I really like it.
