Hi all, I am due in 2 weeks and we are having real trouble choosing a boys name, I have done a search on here for this name and noticed it hasn't been mentioned often so just wondered what the general opinion is? I know of 2 both around 25 years old one with nn - eld/elmo and the other nn - Dred.

Other options we have thought of are:
Euan/Ewan
Ethan
Edward

For some reason me and DH can only agree on names beginning with E!

Thanks in advance

sounds like a wizard

MrsM511 · 29/07/2012 16:41

Hi,

I prefer Ewan but I have a brother named that!

BigHairyFlowers · 29/07/2012 16:44

Reminds me of Doctor Who - Eldred Must Live! Eldred Must Live!

Think that was Eldrad though. And I'm just realising I might be a bit of a geek Grin

forevergreek · 29/07/2012 16:45

Elwood?

VolAuVent · 29/07/2012 16:47

I like Ethan and Edward.

How about Edwin, Elliot, Elias, Eric, Ezra, Emil, Edmund?

shimmy0 · 29/07/2012 16:50

Sorry but I think it has an awful sound to it. It is unusual but I just hate the "dread" sound at the end, it's a little like the girls name Mildred I can't bear that name at all either.

insancerre · 29/07/2012 16:54

How about Evan?
I don't really like Eldred. it would take a child with a strong personality to carry it off or they will hate it.

olimpia · 29/07/2012 16:55

Eldred: Don't like at all, sorry!
Ethan and Edward are fine though.

MrsJohnDeere · 29/07/2012 18:44

Ewan or Edward much nicer imho

AndWhenYouGetThere · 29/07/2012 18:46

Euan is by far my favourite - especially with this spelling.

peanutMD · 29/07/2012 19:39

Not keen at all.

How about Elijah?

Wolfcub · 29/07/2012 19:43

My favourite uncle was an Eldred, he was the most amazing man and it's a great name

goGBTeacher · 29/07/2012 19:50

Edwin?

PickleLittle · 01/08/2012 21:19

Thank you for the opinions, and the other good suggestions to mull over :) I am pleased that I still like it after so many people say they don't
(I know that may sound strange but made me realise it doesn't matter to me what others think of it as much as I thought it would)

Agree with the strong personality thing, both Eldreds that we know of have very outgoing fun loving personalities- maybe that is part of why we do love it so much :)
Don't know what we are having yet so this might be totally moot, we will probably wait till we meet him or her before making any final decisions...
Anyway thanks again :)

What about Elmer? It was on our list for a while - got some mixed feedback from various people (something with a cartoon character?) but I still quite like it.

Also like Edwin as already suggested.

Not sure about Eldred, I also thought of Mildred for some reason. But it is quite unusual!

PickleLittle · 01/08/2012 22:37

I do like Elmer and my daughter would love it! it is the name of her favourite multi-coloured elephant Elmer and we haven't listened to any of her other suggestions which were Peppa and George!

Elmer is a fantastic name, would be a great choice :)

VolAuVent · 02/08/2012 00:03

There's Elmer Bernstein the composer as well as Elmer the Elephant :o

roteelefant · 02/08/2012 00:21

Eldred and Edwin I don't like,

Elmer is alright though I prefer Elmo (I had a teacher Sister Elmo she was lovely)
Euan and Edward are nice

WandaDoff · 02/08/2012 00:24

If you use Eldred, then you need to use 'Tiger' as the NN

Stonefield · 02/08/2012 00:27

If you like it go for it.
I really like Ethan,
Also,
Elmore
Eli
Egil
Ephraim
Eddard

WandaDoff · 02/08/2012 00:33

I like ALL of Stonefield's names better than Eldred Confused

Stonefield · 02/08/2012 00:38

Gee thanks Wanda Smile
