Pr. Ellie-a, not eel-e-a. Think you can also spell it Ellia (Have learned this from Google, so pls feel free to correct me) :)

Heard a little girl being called in on beach this afternoon and thought it was pretty and not as commonplace as ''Ellie''. WDYT?

Nope. Made up and sounds pretty tacky.

Staverton · 25/07/2012 02:01

I know an adult Elia. She is beautiful as is the name. It's Spanish.

mathanxiety · 25/07/2012 02:25

Lovely. I thought it was Hebrew though. A variant of Eliana.

Dogsmom · 25/07/2012 08:40

I know an Elya, she's a vet nurse where I take my dogs, she does get called Ellie though.

littletomato · 25/07/2012 08:45

Beautiful name and I think it's also Greek.

MammaTonic · 25/07/2012 10:59

I think it's lovely; I prefer it spelled Ellia. I think Elia would invite to many mispronunciations. And it is definitely a name in it's own right.

I thought it was a boys name for some reason

popsnsqeeze · 25/07/2012 11:00

I know it as a hebrew boys name. It's beautiful. Think i'm going to add it to my list.

I think it can be a girls name too

AThingInYourLife · 25/07/2012 11:30

I prefer it as a boy's name, as in Elia Kazan.

For a girl it just sounds like a slight change to boring Ellie to freshen it up.

SoozleQ · 25/07/2012 17:18

I know an adult Elia - she's Italian by way of family background, I believe. I think it's a lovely name. The Elia I know is mad as a box of frogs, by the way, but I suspect that has nothing to do with her name Grin

I'm giving it the thumbs up.

BackToBligg · 25/07/2012 21:16

It's a boys' name in Italian. Elijah in English. Elijah = boy innit?

ellesabe · 25/07/2012 22:19

When I read the name I pronounced it in a different way from your two options. Ell-IGH-ah... a bit like Elijah but without the 'j' sound.

Flutterbutterby · 25/07/2012 22:26

I was unsure how to pronounce it when I saw it written down however from your post OP it sounds very pretty. I'd expect it to be shortened to Ellie.

I met a woman (aged approx 25) about 10 years ago and her name was Aliya which is very similar. Although it's since become a little more popular, at the time I'd not heard it before and I thought it was a really lovely name (and still do).

Polkadotfanatic · 25/07/2012 22:49

I think it is close to the boy's name Elias which could be why some people are thinking boy. It is definitely a girl's name though. One for the shortlist (which grows longer by the day!)

:)

It's definately a boys name. But glad I didn't name my son this now. Elias also is Elijah.

SoozleQ · 26/07/2012 23:55

Well the lady I know called Elia is definitely not a boy. Her name is pronounced Elle-ee-a with no emphasis on any of the syllables - a bit like Elliott but swapping the ot with a. Probably helps that she has an Italian surname but I don't think there's anything wrong with the name for a little girl.

Badgerina · 27/07/2012 10:20

Don't like it. Looks like Eliza (lovely name) with a typo. Sounds wrong.

UnimaginitiveDadThemedUsername · 27/07/2012 10:49

It's like Delia or Celia, but with 20% off.

badtime · 27/07/2012 11:19

It appears that is a unisex name - I think of it as a boys' name, mainly because of Elia Kazan (NOT because it is similar to Elias Hmm), but it seems it is also used for girls.

FireOverBabylon · 27/07/2012 11:23

sorry, I'd think of it as a boy's name as well. Too similar to Amyas and Elias, both boy's names.

BackToBligg · 27/07/2012 17:43

Its Greek as well. (helpful) Its a girly sounding boys name but I know of female Elias too. I do think its a beautiful name.

MungoJelly · 27/07/2012 17:51

I taught a lovely Elia - she'd be about 16 by now. Definitely a real name!
