The name my dad wanted to call me was Deborah, as a kid I would have preferred this name but now im not convinced though it's a lovely name. What about you guys?

I was going to be Ruth but I have an older cousin with the same name and my parents worried it'd be 'big Ruth' and 'little Ruth', if I was a boy they wanted Martin.

I ended up Esther Ruth.

According to my mum I was always going to be a girl and always going to be called Olivia.

According to my dad I was going to be Leanne or Lisa if a girl and Alexander if a boy.

I'm an Olivia.

Homebird8 · 25/07/2012 10:23

If I were a boy my parents had chosen David.

Dad wanted Imogen ( which I love) but Mum said it sounded too much like Sanatogen and wouldn't let him.

roguepixie · 25/07/2012 10:36

The alternative was Samantha!!

If I had been a boy I would have been called Christian.

elah11 · 25/07/2012 10:45

My parents wanted to call me Deborah Anne, tg they didnt. Instead they chose my name after seeing it on a tub of talcum powder (and no its not Imperial leather :) )

TruthSweet · 25/07/2012 14:03

I was going to be called Maria (being due near Christmas) but apparently I looked like a Verity (small, purple, with long black hair is what a Verity looks like in that case, and no, I don't look like a Verity anymore Wink) so Mum changed her mind.

rockinhippy · 25/07/2012 14:12

Sophia - think I might have liked it :)

DH was nearly a JeremyGrin - no offence to any Jeremys out there, but if you knew DH - I just cannot imagine him with such a name

mrsnec · 25/07/2012 14:26

Was going to be a Tanya! But both my parents have the tradition of parents first names as kids middle names. It didn't work with Elizabeth. Chose something festive as I was born at Xmas.

IslaValargeone · 25/07/2012 14:32

Had I been a boy I would have been Hamilton Confused

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 25/07/2012 14:38

I'm not sure my dad ever forgave me for not being a Michael Sad

If I'd been a boy they chose David (also for my brother but he ended up as Philip)

Alternative girls name was Demelza. I am so not a Demelza! I think my mum said it was from Poldark which she was really into.

I got a common name and was one of 5 in my year at school.

jandymaccomesback · 25/07/2012 18:53

Karin or Ian.
They ended up with a very 1950s name.

KateF · 25/07/2012 19:03

Apparently my dad wanted to call me Antonia or Francesca - mum won Smile. As my younger brother is Richard I assume I would have got that had I been a boy.

outtolunchagain · 25/07/2012 19:05

I was going to be Melanie but as my surname was a colour my mum thought it sounded like a paint chartGrin Dad wanted LesleyHmm.If a boy I would have been Martin which I really don't like.

eandh · 25/07/2012 19:08

I was meant to be Alison but my mums older sister had my cousin 3 months before me and used the name if I had been a boy colin (thank god I was a girl) dad named me in the end after Beatles song that was playing as I arrived (he delivered me at home as very quick labour 20 is start to finish)

Dd1 was going to be Isabelle or Ellie ,went for Ellie
Dd2 was going to be Jessica or Charlotte and arrived and we decided on Hattie!

Pochemuchka · 25/07/2012 19:10

I'd have been Robert if I was a boy.

My other name choices were Rebecca or Rachel.

(Notice a theme yet?!)

I got another 'R' name which I have grown to love.

StrawberryMojito · 25/07/2012 22:45

My mum nearly called me Hilary. Thank god she changed her mind.

TheCraicDealer · 25/07/2012 22:53

If DT and I had been boys we would have been Michael, George, William or David, which are all quite nice.

In the end Dad picked my name (Deborah- after a barmaid whose name he saw on her name badge) and mum picked DT's. She got a very 80's name, so I think I won that one. She beat me out of the traps though.

DP's mum wanted to call him Guy. Thankfully she was talked out of it!

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 25/07/2012 22:55

Lydia for a girl (which I am). Theodore had I been a boy (thank God i was not!). My actual name is as nice as Lydia.

Lannie33 · 26/07/2012 02:57

I was almost Triina but my mom is Riina so she decided against it. Had i been a boy I would've been Heikki.

WantAnOrange · 26/07/2012 06:49

If I'd been a boy I would be Keith. Hmm

ripsishere · 26/07/2012 07:07

My Dad wanted to call me Willhelmina. Thank goodness my more sensible mum talked him out of it.
Had I been a boy, I'd have been known as Robert. There are a lot of Roberts mentioned here.

jandymaccomesback · 26/07/2012 11:22

And what's wrong with Willhelmina?

GnocchiNineDoors · 26/07/2012 11:26

My parents two favourite names became my first and second names. Shame they are the wrong way round in my opinion as my first name is common as muck and my middle name is rare.

If I were a boy I would have been Dane (if my dad had his way) or Rhys if DM got her way. This was nearly 30 years ago too so totally not usual names of that era.
