Harvey?

So I think we are pretty settled on Annie for a girl but have had such problems with boys names for DC1.

We really like Harvey but also:
George
Alfie
Barney
Freddie

What do you think?

I really like Annie. I totally dislike Harvey. I like Freddie, Barney though. George is ok. NOt Alfie though.

sabrina..without that still not a lot

VolAuVent · 19/07/2012 20:21

George is the best of the bunch. I'd rule most of them out as they're either nicknames or surnames. I do like Freddie as nickname for Frederick though. How about Alfred, and then you can use Alfie or Freddie?

shimmy0 · 20/07/2012 08:03

Barney? Seriously?

Stellan · 20/07/2012 08:31

I would choose George as all of your other choices are very cutesy. I don't like cutesy names on the birth certificate. For example, I prefer more formal names such as Alfred and Annabel with nicknames like Alfie and Annie.

It is worth you and your partner asking the question: 'Would I like this name myself?' If so, you've got a good name; if not, don't use it!

Personally, I wouldn't mind being an Annie but would prefer to be an Anna. If I were a boy, I would probably not want to be called Barney - even though on paper it is lovely. Your answers will be different but it's a useful exercise for narrowing down your shortlist. It is easier to forget you're naming a person and not just a baby.

Well said Stellan. When we are going through baby names me and my fiancé I have one thought in mind the whole time which is "Will this name sound or look professional enough at a job interview".
People tend to forget that the baby will one day be enlisting for university, filling out a job application form, getting married and all the rest. Their first name should be something they should be proud of and not make them feel embarrassed in any way.
Ok this will probably be seen as rude. I would name my dog Barney, but not my son.

The love I have for the name Harvey is almost unhealthy. Unfortunaltly I had a wanker manager with the name & he has forever tainted it for me.

George- Love, would've used but have one in the family already.
Alfie- Hate this, I don't 'get' it, but each to their own!
Barney- I went to school with a Barnaby & like that however Barney will forever be a purple dinosaur to me.
Freddie- Like as a nn, wouldn't personally use it on a birth cert.

But like Andrew Flintoff, Prince Harry etc there is no reason why you couldn't use 'Robert' on a birth cert but annouce he'll be known as Emu.

I'm not keen on Annie (purely because of the annoying orphan!).

Viviennemary · 20/07/2012 11:07

I do like the name Annie. And from the boys list I like George best. Not very keen on Harvey.

NurseBernard · 20/07/2012 11:26

Harvey is ghastly.

George is good.

Nemonemo · 20/07/2012 11:32

Oooo Emu, I like that!! Wink

Barnaby is lovely. Nn Barney.

agree with all the comments on giving what's typically a nickname as the full name.

shimmy0 · 20/07/2012 12:12

Emu? Rod Hull and Emu? He was a puppet bird who was forever grabbing men by their private parts!
Am I just showing my age lol?

Dogsmom · 20/07/2012 16:16

I have a friend named Harvy, lovely guy, spelt without the 'e' though, I always think HarvEy is more the surname spelling.

It seemed an unusual name when we first met him but it soon grew and was never shortened either.

marge2 · 20/07/2012 16:28

I know 2 Harveys . One is horrible and one is a horse.

BigBandwitch · 20/07/2012 16:35

The only Harvey I know is overweight and so is his Mum. It makes me think of that poor kid. He hadn't a chance.

I'd rather be an Annie than an Anna, just because I think there are a fair few Annas and Hannahs nwo.

CouldYouPleaseCallMeCordelia · 20/07/2012 16:44

Love Harvey, I know I'm in the minority though!

VickyU · 20/07/2012 18:52

Hi all. Thanks so much for the advice. There is a big chance our baby will have red hair as my husband does. If so - I think Annie would just be ridiculous! Do you agree? Same goes strangely I think for Harry if its a boy!

So interesting how Harvey divides people. I guess I thought it was quite inoffensive! Totally get what you are saying about cutesy names - I think we have not been careful enough about that. LOVE the idea of Alfred being shortened to Freddie though...
