DC2 is due in 2 weeks. DS1 is Max. We have the commonest surname.

We have 3 possible girls names, which we are happy with. But I am convinced this is another boy, DH's family don't have girls Grin

Boys names we like but don't love

Finlay
Hugo
Oscar
Cooper

That's it. I have two books from the library, no help at all. Really don't remember it being this hard last time - help!

Oh, and Isaac was another. But now we've gone off it!

Hi, we had a similar problem and only drew up a shortlist about 2 weeks prior too.

I found the book Bring Back Beatrice helpful because it suggests alternatives and variations 'if you like Seth, you might like Noah' etc. And had some interesting ones in there. The author has strong views on certain names but that made it fun to read and less overwhelming than a dictionary of names. Good luck.

Harrison
Rufus
Jacob
Samuel
Nathan
Lewis

If you have the commonest surname, I'd scratch off all names in the top 50, maybe even the top 100, for fear of duplicates within the class/school. I was at university with two girls called 'Elizabeth Smith' and, if I recall correctly, they both had the same middle name too.

Stellan · 18/07/2012 16:43

And both went by 'Lizzie'!

Rafferty, Wyatt, Seth, Jonah, Fraser, Toby, Caspar.

My sis in law was absolutely certain her baby was a boy, it was a girl, you might get to use one of your girls names anyway!

Love Finlay - esp. Finn, and your other names are nice too.

Or how about:
Jackson
Silas
Wilson
Linus
Tobias
Caspian
Leo
Barnaby
Theo
Spencer
Wilbur
Charlie
Evan

Eric
Frederick
Stanley
Winston
Morgan
Ned
Billy
Miles
Jasper

I'm not saying I like all these but trying to think of a few that are "different"...

billybear30 · 21/07/2012 20:16

i think its much harder to name a second, u have to take in siblings name into account aswell, which rules out a lot more names, try not to worry bout it, something will jump out at you x

Pootle78 · 21/07/2012 20:25

We're in the same boat, no 2 will be here by next weekend and we have middle names only, oh well!!!

Good luck with the search, I may have to steal some suggestions!!!

evamummy · 21/07/2012 20:33

As you have a very common surname, I would definately avoid a popular first name. Otherwise your ds will have a very difficult differentiating himself which, depending on which field he works in, can be a pain in the #.

How about
Dominic
Robert
Fabian
Winston
Quentin
Caspar
Edwin

Perhaps have a look at last years ONS lists of ALL baby names used (think all that were used more than twice are listed) and have a look beyond the top 100 or even top 250 names - there are a lot of nice normal but underused names on there.
