Jasmine?

I have a friend who is expecting a girl and this is a name she mentioned as a possibility. I don't know if the sounds are too similar when said together. I would appreciate any feedback!

TIA

When shortened you have Jess and Jas. Very similar. Hmm

PoppyWearer · 16/07/2012 19:08

Sorry, wrong emoticon. I meant Confused.

VolAuVent · 16/07/2012 19:46

I think they're too similar.

AgathaTrunchbull · 16/07/2012 20:33

If she doesn't shorten them, they're not too similar. I'm not keen on the name, to be honest, but there's nothing particularly wrong with Jasmine.

Geranium3 · 16/07/2012 20:35

not together, more variety and imagination required!

BillyBollyBandy · 16/07/2012 20:35

maybe Yasmin instead?

Agree too similar

Heifer · 16/07/2012 21:39

do you mean you already have a Jessica and are thinking about Jasmine for your 2nd? or that your friend may have a Jasmine and you are thinking about Jessica for yours?

Sorry if I'm being daft and unsure Grin

MammaTonic · 16/07/2012 21:45

Sorry, Heifer, it's my friend who already has a Jessica and she's due in a couple of months with another DD and thinking of calling her Jasmine.

Jessica & Jasmine - slightly too similar.

Jess & Jas - too simiilar, bordering on twee.

Truthfully, I think your friend just really loves the name Jessica and, whether consciously or not, is looking for a name that sounds like it for her second daughter. And who can blame her? She's picked a name she loves for her first daughter and wants the same for the second. That said, there are names that incorporate elements of Jessica but don't sound as matchy as Jasmine.

If she likes Jessica, she might like the sound of:
Alice
Alicia (uh-LIS-ee-uh)
Alyssa
Annika
Bethany
Daisy
Danica
Elizabeth
Elsa
Esme
Florence
Heather
Isabel
Isabella
Melissa
Natasha
Monica
Sasha
Veronica
Willa

Wow Stellan I think you've totally hit the nail on the head! I think that's why I've been reserved about telling her that I think the names are too similar.

I might need to gently suggest that they are matchy. I think she might like Alicia or Alice; maybe even Melissa and Natasha.

She seems quite taken with Jasmine, so I'll need to be sensitive. Can't risk pissing her off if it's the name and her DH are set on ...

Thanks everyone for your input :)

I should add that when I tell her that the names match, as long as she's aware and okay with that, then it's not an issue.

I quite like Jess and Jas!

ChocolateIsAFoodGroup · 18/07/2012 03:03

My friend has Adrian and Audrey - which seems fine - but I think for two girls the Jess and Jas thing is just too matchy, no?

MammaTonic · 18/07/2012 08:14

Yes, choc, definitely too matchy to my ears. However, I think like winkle, my friend likes the similarity and alliteration that comes with Jessica and Jasmine/Jess and Jas. It's not a name combo for me, but then my tastes are perhaps not hers.

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to reply.

Ok, agree that Jessica and Jasmine are too similar BUT don't forget how often people comment on how upset they have been made my friends/family commentating on their name choice before the baby was born... This could go badly wrong, however good your intentions..

Good luck...

MammaTonic · 18/07/2012 15:34

Totally agree with you, Heifer. I'm seeing my friend at the weekend and will ask her if she's still thinking about Jasmine. If she says yes and seems very keen, I'm not going to say a word. If, though, she's unsure, I'll point out (gently) that the sound is similar to Jessica and whether she's given it any thought.

I know it's really none of my business and so will tread very carefully to avoid causing offence and/or upset!
