I don't know if I am having a boy or girl but I have a boys names I like. Girls are more tricky.
On my shortlist I have margo, Vivienne, Stella and maud. Oh and I like Joan too. But not sure I love any of them. I would like something that isn't too common but also isn't try hard. I would have loved Harper if the beckhams hadn't used it.
Does anybody have any bright ideas?
Thanks :)
Also what do you think of alliteration? My surname begins with m...

I like your list apart from Maud, sounds quite heavy to me.

What about Hero instead of Harper. Or Avery?

I remember reading about your post from traveling and finding out about the baby. What about India then?

amck5700 · 15/07/2012 18:59

i like Stella

Other suggestions:
Asia
Lara
Laurie
Jodi

SilkStalkings · 15/07/2012 22:14

I quite like a bit of alliteration, or you could just use it for the middle name.

So I'm going to list M namesGrin.
Merrily
Marianne (nn Maggie?)
Morwenna
Marguerite
Merryn

I think I have very different taste to you so probably not much help but I'll try!

I quite like Vivienne from your list, Stella is ok, don't like Margot, Maud or Joan at all.

How about:
Verity, Vanessa, Sadie, Sienna, Serena, Seren, Melissa, Megan, Morgan, Marianne, Jade, Jordan, Jasmine.

PollyIndia · 15/07/2012 22:58

I love hero jaffacake, but myleene klass used it so it's out. I am not a fan of India knight which cuts out India. Thanks for the other suggestions everyone. I have just been with friends going through about a thousand baby names - their idea! - and only found a couple more I liked. I am looking for unconventional but not too unconventional, if the makes sense.
I actually really like Isis which was the name of the river at my university and is an Egyptian name. Oh, and ela, which was my grandmother's name.
It's really tough! I am terrible with names having association, with people I know or people in the public eye or rhyming slang etc. I am running out of options!!

Isis is lovely, lots of girl power.

Itsboywonder · 16/07/2012 07:24

Starla?

PollyIndia · 16/07/2012 07:30

I love Delilah but someone I know has a Delilah. Thanks silstalkings Smile.
Some of those others are a bit too unusual but I really appreciate you all coming up with ideas.
So unconventional but not a name a child would have to spell or would have people repeat back at her in a confused way!!
I don't ask for much !

Shame as Hero is a great name...find a name you love and someone in the public eye will at some point us the same name. sodslaw Smile

Greek Mythology Juno, Athena, Olympia Grin to name a few.

Good nn potential Genevieve, Josephine, Catherine (various spellings) Philippa, Vanessa, Abigail, Stephanie, Victoria, Charlotte, Elizabeth.

Unisex secretly quite like masculine sounding names on girls
Alexis, Rowan, Ashley, Bailey, Billie, Bo, Jamie, Robin, Jess(e) Piper.

Heard off but not popular in my neck of the woods anyway
Ursula, Estelle, Zoe(y) Adrianna, Pia, Savannah, Layla, Lauren, Faith, Tia, Dixie, Astrid, Sarah, Elsa, Mary, Sally, Leonora, Suzannah, Tanith,

I heard of a baby Laura and Sarah last week...makes a nice change imo.

Any good Polly

Starla sounds like a lonely barmaid in a Deep South honkytonk bar who keeps falling for the lies of married linedancers.

Stellan will you please stop suggesting my DD's name. It's not popular for a reason Wink

Seriously through you do suggest some great names.

Stellan · 16/07/2012 13:26

jaffacakehips - would love to know what the name is; I must really like it if I keep suggesting it!

fanjodisfunction · 16/07/2012 14:00

Love Isis

How about

Henna
Talia
Iona
Olive
Magda
Agnes

PollyIndia · 16/07/2012 14:51

Jaffacake, you are right and hero is a great name but I think people would assume I had copied myleene which wold be annoying as I kind of hate the whole heat celebrity culture!
I also like unisex names for girls. In your nn potential list you have my real name and my middle name and my sister's name and middle name!! I like estella and Dixie... I need to stop playing mallet's mallet with baby names ie word association. So you say Ursula, I think fat octopus witch in little mermaid. But Ursula is a lovely name! Great list stellan. In fact a lot were on my original list which I have since culled for spurious reasons. About 7 names belong to girls of friends of mine.i do love sylvie and honor though my friend's husband said honor could end up being the butt of teenage jokes about her honour. Unlikely I am sure but this is what I am dealing with! He also put me off stella as said he only thought of the beer.
Fanjodi thanks. The more I think of it, the more I like it. And my mum likes it, which is a first! I also like your other choices. I have a 3 syllable surname so think keeping it simple for first name could be good.

Did anyone have any thoughts on ela?

OP posts:
redrubyshoes · 16/07/2012 14:56

Not sure about Ela spelt that way. How about Elowen?

PollyIndia · 16/07/2012 15:10

Ela was my grandmother's name. I have never heard it used since except on my sister and niece's middle names - that could put it off limits actually. I don't really like elowen. Sounds like an acronym - L.O.N.!

OP posts:
fanjodisfunction · 16/07/2012 15:58

I think you should go for Isis and have Ela as a middle name.

(Would love to use Isis myself but DH not keen)

PollyIndia · 16/07/2012 16:39

In that sense, it kind of helps that the baby's father doesn't want to be involved. He would definitely hate all my names and I would hate his. It is hard enough figuring it out alone!!
Thanks fanjodisfunction. That is a good idea. I also have to have Ann (family reasons) so would be Isis ela Ann...
