My best friend is due her first little girl in 3 weeks time and had decided on the name Penelope.........as you can guess yesterday's Kardashian announcement has put her in a state!! She is sooooooo upset and doesn't know what to do, she thinks that everyone will think that she copied the Kardashians and that the name is going to get super popular but still she loves it!

I would go ahead deffo. They are not that famous and it's a classic name. No one will even think about it IMO.

She's in a state? She's got bigger problems than what to name her daugher then Grin

Is it that big of a deal? Do the Kardashians wield that much influence?

susiedaisy · 11/07/2012 17:05

Everyone! Really? We don't all know who that other person is I mean I've heard the name but would have absolutely no idea what she's doing or if she having kids, I would tell your friend not to worry about it, keep the name!

FireOverBabylon · 11/07/2012 17:06

Most people won't give a toss what thingie Kardashian has called her daughter in 2 years' time and presumably your friend will be picking a more sensible middle name to go with it. Tell her to go with it anyway, it's a lovely name, and she can always shorten it to Penny or even Nell(?) if she finds it is becoming too popular.

I can't see loads of parents rushing to name their DDs after an American reality show star's baby though.

PercyFilth · 11/07/2012 17:24

Who?

DottieRose · 11/07/2012 17:29

Hopefully not.....thanks for your advice so far imgoing to show her this later and maybe it will help her decide!

The Kardashians do not own the name Penelope. Its not totally unusual (like, say, Sienna Miller's Marlow, or Gwen Stefani's Zuma). No- one will remember this 'celebrity' choice once it's out of the headlines. Go for it :)

AThingInYourLife · 11/07/2012 17:37

"The Kardashians do not own the name Penelope."

Hmm

I think her friend's problem is not that she thinks they own the name, but that the name will be associated with them. Which it might be.

MammaTonic · 11/07/2012 17:52

No, the name won't be associated with them at all!! That's what I meant by the K's not 'owning' the name. Penelope isn't particularly different; it's not an Ellie or Eva/Eve/Evie, but it's not a Blue Ivy or Harlow Winter Kate IYSWIM.

squoosh · 11/07/2012 17:54

Penelope/Penny is hardly an unheard of name is it?

People will probably more likely think you're a fan of the Big Bang Theory.

MammaTonic · 11/07/2012 17:56

Yeah Squoosh that's what I mean :)

VolAuVent · 11/07/2012 18:16

Most sensible people don't take any notice of the Kardashians. I have the vaguest clue of who they are but that's it. Penelope is a lovely name :)

Wearsuncream · 11/07/2012 19:20

I have heard the name Kardashian - but wouldnt recognise them/her if they passed me on the street. Certainly wouldnt know they had a daughter of the name Penelope. Presume these are reality TV people? If someone told me I had chosen a similar name to that of a person on TV I would raise my eyebrown and look witheringingly down upon at them.

GnocchiNineDoors · 11/07/2012 19:30

The Kardashians are a plague on society. Now we cant even name our babies the same as theirs?!

Bloody reality tv shite and all its consequences.

AgathaTrunchbull · 11/07/2012 19:55

It's a 3000-year-old name (Odysseus' wife) and not all that unusual. Tell her to stick to her guns.

Anonymumous · 11/07/2012 21:59

Or she could always go for Persephone instead - it sounds almost the same.

Personally I am still waiting in fear and dread for the announcment that Chantelle and Alex have decided to give their daughter the same name as mine. That is much, much more scary than some obscure American reality TV star doing the same thing.

Badgerina · 11/07/2012 22:53

Yar boo and sucks to the Kardashians! Penelope is my most favourite girls name ever. She should use it. It's gorgeous. I do understand her wobble though. I remember only too well the day an "Oscar" appeared in Eastenders Confused Angry

savoycabbage · 11/07/2012 22:57

I don't know who they areConfused

Anyway, I changed my dd2's name after a celebrity used the same one six weeks before and now I don't know what I was thinking. Nobody knows the name of some celebrity's six year old.

Jackie432 · 13/07/2012 16:56

It's a lovely name tell her not to worry...not everyone knows who the
Kardashians are, although it might make the name more popular now a 'celeb' has called their girl it and it's in the mags.

NiceViper · 13/07/2012 17:07

Well, I'd heard the name Kardashian, but thought it was a band (DS1 has just pityingly explained that no, mum, Kasabian is someone total different). They're not universally known, and so I wouldn't change my opinion of this (lovely) name in the slightest.

AnnaNimitty · 16/07/2012 20:30

Can somebody please explain the strange preoccupation that MN has about
their child possibly sharing a name with someone else. This never seemed
to bother people in my day.

darkfever · 17/07/2012 20:01

I couldn't give you the first name of any of the adult Kardashians, never mind their children.

Penelope is not that unusual a name - it's been around for ages. There's plenty of other things to associate Penelope with.

I'd use the name.
