I'm starting a Baby Names mutiny... Who will join me?

CheeseAndBunion · 09/07/2012 21:56

Last year Mumsnetters rallied behind a seemingly pointless quest of mine to find a lost teddy and helped give my son a very Merry Xmas. The comments and posts on my thread were unbelievably kind and I was struck by what a great bunch of people Mumsnetters must be. On the Baby Names forum though I often read comments which would give the impression we are the total opposite and that instead it's populated by quite a vicious bunch.

I have read some awful things written about my child's name on here, comments that have sometimes really stung. If I was posting to ask advice about his weight, hair colour, acne or sexuality then I have no doubt people would reply with kindness but instead I've seen endless posts about how 'x' will never be a doctor or using 'y' is akin to child abuse and that you shouldn't have been allowed to breed if you were going to name your baby 'z' (or worse something beginning with k). I've seen parents and children described in the most awful way just because their naming style differs from others and for the most part the names being attacked are ones in the current top 100. Names that will be unremarkable, commonplace and totally acceptable once our youngsters are young no more. As most people on this forum are likely to be hormonal parents to be, or sleep deprived and angst ridden, I wonder if an intervention is needed?

I'm going to start an appreciation society for the hyphenated. A support network for those with the initial K. A meeting place for the made up, awkwardly spelt and abbreviated. You're all welcome - membership is free and there is booze on offer. Founder members include Tony and Cherie (nickname and slightly common sounding), Condoleeza Rice (made up spelling), Madonna (sounds like a sex worker) and Willie Walsh (never going to get a decent job with a name like that). Kay Burley, Kirsty Young and Kate Middleton have shown interest in joining. Yes, Kate has the far more acceptable 'Catherine' to fall back on but it's obvious she has experienced first hand the negative affect on your life a 'K' name can cause. Our hyphenated patrons have asked to remain anonymous as they know the persecution that might follow if the unfortunate dash in their name becomes public.

So I'll start...

My name is CheeseandBunion and I have a child with a nickname on their birth certificate... And I like it.

Love this thread!

I have shortened my name and shock horror it ends in an 'i' no cleaning loos for me then!

I named DS such an unusual name that when i say 'his name is x' they say 'are you sure you don't mean y'

Im 100% positive of my child's name Hmm

ilovemybum · 10/07/2012 00:25

Oh and i also have 2 middle names!

LulaPalooza · 10/07/2012 00:28

My name is Lula and if I am ever lucky enough to have a little girl, her name will be Lula even if I have to whisk her to the registrar in secret without Mr Palooza knowing

phlebas · 10/07/2012 00:30

whispers mine have .... a doubled barrelled surname & obviously I love the boys best because they have sensible middles names but dd's1 is chavvy & dd2's is incredibly rare, regional and Isn't A Real Name at all. Huzzah!

monsterchild · 10/07/2012 00:32

I am working hard to find the right names so that my unborn child's initials will either be WTF or ELF. I don't really care know yet what the actual names will be, except the family name.

Regardless of his or her real name, the child will be called "Scruffs" because that is already what I am calling it in utero and why should I change it?

CheeseAndBunion · 10/07/2012 00:34

Woo hoo! This is going splendidly. I can't wait for the Americans to get online. They love names like Randy and Paris so they're bound to want to join us!

At this rate I'll be needing to get us headquarters sorted by the morning. Maybe the Olympic Stadium will be going spare once all that sports shenanigans is over?

Luls, I wanted Tallula as a name, I am still campaigning for it. even if we have a son... we could change it to Talluler

monsterchild · 10/07/2012 00:34

Cheese, we have arrived!

CheeseAndBunion · 10/07/2012 00:37

Oh, and IHeartKing, my monkey update is in Mumsnet Classics I think. Thanks so much for remembering. That stripey fella made our Xmas.

My DS has an impeccably authentic Irish Gaelic name, complete with an elegant elongated fada (á) on the final syllable (courtesy of his Dubliner Da) - which unfortunately transmutes into one of those chav "K" names in the English variation. Hmm

Everyone misspells his name, or mispronounces it - unless they are Irish. Hmm

What a pisser. Good thing he's a naice MC UK RP teen complete with floppy hairdo and geek specs, otherwise I'd have to trade him in for a more upmarket model.

He would have been called Julian (NN Jules) if I'd had my way. Or Rosalind Venetia if a girl. Blush

Anyways, you have a point OP. But only up to a point. Am not a fan of v v silly names, but there you go. Quirky, yes. Bonkers/potentially humiliating/ illiterate - no!

phlebas · 10/07/2012 00:41

oh monsterchild you've reminded me (though how I could forget!) - one of my dc has initials spelling pleb Grin

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 10/07/2012 00:45

Rhett I like the name too, you obviously have great taste Grin

The spelling Kailum sends some MNetters heads to explode!

MrsRhettButler · 10/07/2012 00:48

How should it be spelt? I know a Kaylum.

MrsRhettButler · 10/07/2012 00:49

Oh wait I'm guessing Calem? Hmm, that looks wrong though Confused

DD1 has the shortened form of my name as her middle name.
I never use my full one and wish my birth certificate did likewise.

LapsedPacifist · 10/07/2012 01:00

Aged Mama LOATHED Ds's names (both trad Irish) . And he has two surnames Shock - not double barrelled!

Callum? Nice Scots name?

Always fancied mega-poncetastic names when I was still fertle just for the hell of it - but over the last 15 years Ptolemy and Ottalie have become MAINSTREAM-shock] Hmm

NoComet · 10/07/2012 01:02

oh and I know two ....Mays, one with a hyphen and one with out.

and the one without has a nn for a first name, and it's really pretty and it suites her.

IHeartKingThistle · 10/07/2012 01:17

Aw, I just welled up at your Christmas thread! That's cheered me up!

Loving all these defiant baby namers!

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 10/07/2012 01:23

Apparently its meant to be spelt caelum.

I'm surprised by the K hatred. I said my name on.a thread and after someone said it was common!

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 10/07/2012 01:24

Kaylum was the spelling I saw and where I got the name from

MrsRhettButler · 10/07/2012 01:30

After you said it was your name? Shock people think its ok to be rude, no one would be that rude in rl :(

MrsRhettButler · 10/07/2012 01:36

It took me a while of reading this thread to realise I have a K named child!
In my defence she's still a baby, so easy to forget what they are called for the first year [blush!]

I quite like the Caelum spelling but would be harder for people to pronounce I guess

Mind you, not many can pronounce my dd1 's name! It doesn't matter, you just correct them.

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 10/07/2012 01:46

Straight after so I politely thanked them, strangely enough they didn't reply!

It is popular name for my age is Kelly, my neighbour has the same name and is the same age!
