Thought on these names ...

Megan. I like the name (and nn Meg) but wonder if it could be called a classic? I'm keen that DDs name won't date but know that there are a lot of Megans around - does this make it faddy?

I also like Sally and Erin - are these classics?

Which do you prefer?

'Faddy' names are those that become trendy very quickly as everyone jumps on the bandwagon and gives their child those names. As people get tired of these names they will start to fall out of favour and begin to feel 'dated'.

I would not regards Megan, Sally or Erin as 'faddy'. You could go for Margaret, nickname Megan?

scummymummy · 04/07/2012 22:15

I love the name Sally.

Thanks guys. Any more opinions much appreciated.

I like Megan (though not as keen on Meg) - I only know of one and she is mid-20s!
I like Erin too though not a massive fan of Sally.
I dont think any of them are 'faddy' though and am sure all would date well.

VolAuVent · 05/07/2012 14:36

Megan is a lovely name :) It's quite popular at the moment but also classic enough not to date someone to 2012! Prefer Megan to Sally and Erin too.

mrsv2 · 05/07/2012 14:43

i agree that the names arent faddy but i also wouldnt call them classics....i think they are longstanding names that are middle of the road.....partcularly megan and sally. My only concern is when i think of Meg i think of Smeggymeg and that puts me off but Megan in its full version is lovely

WithACherryOnTop · 05/07/2012 14:47

I like all your names. Megan is very nice.Sally is lovely, and Erin too.

WithACherryOnTop · 05/07/2012 14:47

Sally would probably be my first choice though.

Lannie33 · 05/07/2012 14:59

None are "faddy" but imo they aren't really "classic" either...more middle of the road like someone said.
I like Megan and Erin. Not a fan of Sally.

MammaTonic · 05/07/2012 15:02

All really nice names and none that I think are faddy. I agree with the definitions that have been given upthread.

FWIW, Erin is my preference from your choices.

Britchic · 05/07/2012 15:30

Love love Meg, if I had had a girl she would have been Meg... not the case so I'll have to name my next dog Meg (regardless of sex!)

CherryBlossom27 · 05/07/2012 15:34

I don't think any of these names are faddy at all!

My favourite is Erin, I think it has a nice tone to it if that makes sense!

I'm not too keen on Sally but I'm not really sure why!

Megan is in the middle!

squeak2392 · 06/07/2012 16:46

I think Erin will last a bit longer than some of the faddy names, but I still think it's a bit of one. At least it's not cutesy - those names go out really fast.

I think you could say Sally is faddy because until recently I would have considered it dated and ugly.

Megan could be considered classic, but it just doesn't have the same feel as Charlotte, Emily, Elizabeth, etc.

Either way, I don't think Megan and Erin will date. Not sure about Sally.
I'd choose Erin, but I think it's pretty equal with Megan.

Purplecatti · 08/07/2012 01:04

I'd go for Erin, it's classic and interesting without being too trendy.

Devora · 08/07/2012 01:07

I think they're all nice.

Jac1978 · 08/07/2012 04:36

Erin and Megan are both lovely though I prefer the sound of Megan. Both suitable for when she grows up too.

birdofthenorth · 08/07/2012 07:27

I like all these names.

Sally is by far the most classic and currently least well used. And really lovely IMHO.

Erin is the most faddy in the sense of recently very popular.

Megan peaked in popularity in 1999 when it was the third most popular name (now it's the 23rd) so couldn't be called currently faddy- the most girls with this name are now 13 years old. I really like Meg as a nn.

Type them each into this website & you can see a graph of how popular they've been in recent years...

I'm a Megan, called Meg or Meggie, and I've always liked it. :)

diddl · 08/07/2012 14:54

Megan is lovely.
