Naming dc same name as friends?

DH works with a guy who we see a couple of times a year socially with his family. I love his DDs name and would like to use it (it was on my shortlist before their DD was born). Would it be rude to use the same name? It's not mega popular but isn't unusual

I think it would be ok. It's not as if you see them everyday and if it's not mega rare, they will assume you just have good taste.

If they're casual acquaintances go for it, if you really care about them and would hate to potentially offend, don't.

Unless the name is Magical-Unicorn-Girl I don't think they'll have any reason to be upset.

If you are good friends and care about them, their feelings etc, I'd choose another name - the whole point of naming someone is to identify them as uniquely as possible.

If, on the other hand, they are just acquaintances and you rarely see each other, then I'd use their daughters' name if you love it more than any other name.

It depends on your relationship with them. It doesn't matter how many times a year you see them. If you're good friends, I don't think you should do it. If they're just people you know, go for it!

agree with may and catus. if you are really keen to use it and you are good friends you could ask if they mind. but no point doing this if you are going to use it anyway.

some people really don't care if they have kids with the same names, others hate it. i hate it.

The name is Imogen so It's not unique

where is it on top 100 list? we had friends that did this to us with a name that was round 50 and whilst they obviously didn't care we did. but if you are only acquantances i wouldn't worry - maybe just explain you had already chosen it.

It's 26th on the list - and there's a new list out in the next few weeks, so it's probably about to go higher.

I would choose another name - there are thousands of lovely girls' names out there, so no need to pick one that is already used by your friend imo.

Surely its a compliment to your taste if someone chooses the same name

I guess the naming issue depends if you are happy being a sheep or like to be more individual

I would be amazed if anyone wanted to copy my style of clothes, but, call me
a weirdo, I would be pleased if someone copied my child's name as this actually happened once or twice cos my dd has an unusual name. No one will describe me as a sheep as you would realise if you met me!!!

anna - wasn't calling you a sheep. its the people who can't think of a name themselves i was referring to, and copy people's they know instead

I'd use it. It's not as though you're going to be forever confusing the girls by calling out the name at the park/family dos and it is a very popular name at the moment. I would just tell them first though.

I'd use it its a great name, maybe you could tell them you had decided on that name before their dd was born and make a joke of having such good taste just to mention it so they dont think you first thought of it when they used it :)

Don't sweat it if you only meet up a couple of times a year.

If you see them before your DD is born then you could casually say "We've always loved the name Imogen and it's on our shortlist" then after you've named her " Bet you'll love our choice of name - Imogen" Or your DH could mention along similar lines if he sees this guy at work.

The girls won't be part of the same group of friends or at the same school will they? I can't see any reason why the couple would feel offended.

I'd say, pick whatever name you like. Your child will always be your child, but your friends might not always be your friends.
