Ariane or Arianne?

DP and I have both, independently (believe it or not, hurrah), come up with with Arian(n)e as our chosen girl's name but we have different views on how it should be spelled.

Help me out, lovely people, what do you reckon?

Depends how you want it pronounced. "ariane" would be propetly pronounced to rhyme with "pain". "arianne" to rhyme with "Ann".

I'd have thought both would be pronounced "ann". I don't remember the Ariane space rocket sounding like "pain" - I think that's just a more authentic French way to spell it.

Why would Ariane be pronounced like pain? The vowels are the other way round. I'd pronounce both like Marianne without the M.

I prefer Ariane as a spelling.

I would pronounce Ariane as arry-AH-nuh, and Arianne as arry-ANN.

I prefer Arianne.

It would be pronounced like "pain" or "pane" due to the fact that there is only one "n" consonant separating the two vowels of "a" and "e". That means the a is pronounced as per "pane". The two two "n" consonants between the "a" and the "e" flatten the "a" per the name "Anne".

It might be pronounced differently in different languages - although in French it would strictly speaking have an accent over the "e" to be pronounced per Olive's post. However, in English that should be the two correct pronounciations per the spelling. Up to sozzle of course as to how she chooses to pronounce it.

I think the pronunciation is clearer with 'Arianne' - A-ri-anne.
'Ariane' might be read as 'A-ri-ane' with the '-ane' rhyming with pane, lane, sane etc.

I prefer Ariane. Would pronounce it
Ah-ree-an.
