What can I call DS2?

wearethejoneses · 27/06/2012 12:46

I'm really struggling to find a suitable name for DS2 because our surname is Jones and all of the names I like have some sort of Jones related issue with them or DH who has very tradditional taste doesn't like them.

If our surname wasn't Jones then I would use Joseph, but I think Joe Jones is just too alliterative. I have also discounted James and Joshua for the same reason.

I also like the names Tom, Alex and Peter, but of course there is Tom Jones, Alex Jones (not that famous but not sure I can give DS the same name as a female TV presenter, what if she hangs around forever?). Peter Jones isn't as bad, but as well as the dragon there is the shop.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone can help, keeping in mind DH's fairly boring taste.

william, hugh, nathan, greg, alfred/frederick nn freddie, evan

Oh I should add that the middle name will be Joseph, and that DS1 is called Oliver, although we call him Ollie most of the time.

How about something a little less common/overused? Your ds will perhaps want to be identifiable and, depending on what business he may work in, it could be an advantage to have a name that isn't shared with thousands others.

How about

Dominic Jones
Quentin Jones
Rafael Jones
Tristan Jones
Angus Jones

Imo they sound a lot more interesting than Joe Jones, Tom Jones, Alex Jones or Peter Jones.

NinjaChipmunk · 27/06/2012 12:51

I think you have overthought about Alex Jones and Peter Jones myself as neither of them would have entered my head (although you can bet the next person won't agree Grin)
What about
Edward
Samuel
Charlie

will have a think for some more

Splatch · 27/06/2012 12:57

Would something Celtic go well with Jones, or is that not traditional enough for your DH?
Keiran
Ryan
Evan
Aiden
Declan.

Thanks everyone, I just seem to keep hitting blanks so will work on a new list.

tammyboy DH has what I reckon might be one of the most common name combinations in the UK, he's very successful at what he does, so that argument holds no sway with him Smile

That said we didn't mean to go quite so popular with Oliver, we'd never even considered it before he was born, he just seemed to turn up with the name.

Ninja I'd pretty much decided Alex could be near the top of the list, then tuned into the one show and it was just ruined for me Grin

If you choose Nathan he already has his own song:

And I like it Grin
simonthedog · 27/06/2012 19:59

I think John Jones is a bloody brilliant name. (disclaimer- I am Welsh) :o

BorisJohnsonsHair · 27/06/2012 20:53

I'd be tempted to go with something a bit out of the ordinary - not mad but not what hundreds of other people have. Maybe something like Lawrence or Leon - known names but not overly used at the moment.

sashh · 28/06/2012 10:11

Indiana?

picnicbasketcase · 28/06/2012 10:12

Could have Alexander instead of just Alex?

Littlecherublegs · 28/06/2012 13:55

William
Max
Oscar
Adam
Iain
Philip
Christian
Samuel
Issac
Gabriel
Caleb

3bees · 28/06/2012 14:01

I think you're over thinking too. I understand about the j names as I don't like alliteration either. I've never heard of Alex jones and I don't think many will have. Alex is a great name. How about Xander instead? Tbh I don't even think Tom jones would be a major problem these days, grannies will know him and mums and dads will vaguely but his peers won't. I also didn't know the dragon and would have thought the shop was a bit too specialised for many to have heard of it.

pigletpower · 28/06/2012 14:11

Dexter?

Stellan · 28/06/2012 15:19

Since you have a very commonplace surname, I think you can afford to be a bit braver with your choices! But, if your DH's tastes incline towards the traditional and classic, how about...

Rhodri?
Alistair?
Ivo?
Gabriel?
Oscar?
Scott?
Cameron?
Arthur?
Benjamin?
Aled?
Hugh/Huw?
Alfred?
Albert?
Hamish?
Hugo?
Barnaby?
Leo?
Miles?
Dominic?
Guy?
Francis?
Simon?
Andrew?
Stephen?
William?
Samuel?
Paul?
Edward
Benedict?
Philip?
Timothy?
Robert?
Michael?
Anthony?
Gwilym?
Gareth?
Patrick?
Nathaniel?
Rory?
Tobias?
Mark?
Nicholas?
Luke?
Rupert?
Henry?
Charles?
Zachary?
Clement?
Ethan?

You could still use Alexander, nn Alec.

minipie · 28/06/2012 15:22

I like Alex Jones and have never heard of the TV presenter

COCKadoodledooo · 28/06/2012 15:53

We met a little chap on holiday last year who was known as Seph - short for Joseph. So if you both like it, there is an alternative to Joe.

BlueChampagne · 28/06/2012 15:55

I'd go for Alexander, NN Sandy

poppydaisy · 28/06/2012 17:40

With such a common surname as Jones, I would definately choose a less widely used first name. Otherwise your ds will be one of thousands with the exact same name - not very useful for identifying him imo.

I would certainly avoid top 10 or top 50 names. There are lots and lots of gorgeous underused names outside the top 100.

shouldbedoingtheironing · 28/06/2012 21:15

I really like Lawrence/Laurence and Alistair from the names suggested above. Both classic and underused. I think John Jones sounds fine actually but agree Joe doesn't work with your surname and nor does James.

poppydaisy · 28/06/2012 21:55

I agree - Lawrence Jones sounds nice.

mathanxiety · 28/06/2012 22:14

Ivan Jones
Daniel Jones
