Asher Hughes - does it scan ok?

Hi, our second son is due in September. Me and my husband have been struggling to agree on names. At first I couldn't get Joseph out of my head. My husband likes Joe but isn't keen on Joseph and was not into the compromise of having Joseph on the birth cert and calling him Joe. So we came up with Asher (nice biblical name, means happy, not too trendy) and we were going for that but now DH thinks it doesn't sound right with our surname Hughes. What do you think? We're really struggling to find another name that we both love. Thanks.

Sorry....I know two babies recently named Asher and on scanning it sounded a bit like a tish hoos However I do a lot of double reading and I think you go with what you like, and im not trying to be a meanie....

at least it's not Wayne Koff ahem

Thanks. Yeah, it does sound a bit sneezy.

I think it sounds a bit insipid - no real consonants to get your teeth into.

If you want Joe but not Joseph, how about Jonah?

FunnysInLaJardin · 27/06/2012 13:18

I like it, sounds fine to me. Also like the name Asher. Mind you Ash Hughes could be problematic

Thanks, yeah we had considered Jonah - but isn't that meant to be unlucky?! Also makes me thinks of the Jonas Brothers!

Other names nickname Jo:
Jolyon? [pron. Joe-leon]
Joel?

Yes, sounds sneezy ( A-tish-ooo) to me too, sorry.
Why not Joseph? You can shorten it from birth?

My cousin is Tom, has always been Tom, and when he graduated from uni he had to be poked and reminded to stand up as he didn't know him self by Thomas :) It's just whats on his birth cert

i think it's great. Not sneezy. Very nice.

Johnnydeppsnewmrs · 27/06/2012 19:46

Sorry I don't like it. I get the sneezy vibe too.
(also met a very boysterous child called Asher - became known as Asher the Crasher)

Just popping in to say I know of an Asher Hughes (17 or 18 yr old) and have never thought about it sounding like a sneeze - I will now though!
