Help with our girl's short list

Ok, I am driving myself a bit mad. Not sure if it is hormones, but this week I have decided that this baby (who we know is a girl) NEEDS a name. Up until now I have been very laid back (I am 32weeks).

So we have had a variety of short lists, which seem to get longer then shorter. I would prefer a name that wasn't too popular (I had the most popular name for the year I was born and have always hated being one of 4 everywhere). I also seem to prefer names that can't obviously be shortened (I know there will always be nicknames), as again mine is shortened. However I also want one we love.

So at the moment we have:

Evelyn (my grandmother's middle name)
Amber
Lyra
Hazel (Dh's choice, I am not keen, reminds me of Hazel Blears!)

I did like Alice, but now I am not sure.

I think maybe you could still use Lucy... People will forget.

Have you tried Nymbler? It's a website where you can enter names you like and it comes up with other suggestions.

What about Annabel? I love that name.

Wonder if you are Elizabeth, Victoria, Catherine? All veru pretty names but I get what you mean about too many possibilities. Our DDs are both 'unshortenable' though that hasn't prevented nicknames springing up from us and friends.

I like Caitlin too that you mentioned though it'd be shortened to Cat or Cate.

I knew an Isolde at school. Spelling issue again tho!

Amber for a strawbery blonde girl is especially lovely, Amber Rose X , despite the popularity of Rose MN, its beautiful. congratulations btw

saffronwblue · 24/06/2012 11:56

I love Hazel. I think it works for a little girl and a grown woman. It is both pretty and serious.

Ephiny · 24/06/2012 12:17

I think you could use Lucy even though it was your cat - I understand it might feel a bit odd though. What about Lucia or Lucinda?

Alys or Alicia instead of Alice? Lara instead of Lyra?

The Hazel I knew had a sister called Heather, also red-haired, I think that's a pretty name too and not over-used these days.

ArthurandGeorge · 24/06/2012 12:23

Amber
Eliza
Clara
Lydia
Sadie
Rosa (rather than Rose)
Laura
Lena
Thora
Lotta
Darcey

raininginbaltimore · 24/06/2012 12:59

Dh has just said if I promise not to go on about names any more I can name her what I like!

I think,

Lucy Evelyn
Evelyn Rose
Alice Evelyn

Less keen, but not ruled out

Amber Rose
Hazel

But when I see Lucy Evelyn it looks like her name and I love it.

Beautiful combo. I like the 'y' 'y' thing going on. As long as Evelyn your grandmother wouldn't have minded the cat taking precedence :)

Amber Rose v pretty but if your surname, or future spouse, is Smith for example, it'll be a bit unfortunate.

Raining, tee hee I love being right! My money is on Catherine.

raininginbaltimore · 24/06/2012 13:26

My grandmother would find the cat reference hilarious! Evelyn was actually her middle name. Her first name was too old fashioned for Dh.

Lucy Evelyn is lovely :)
FWIW in my husband's family there are at least 2 people named after, or at least the same name as deceased dogs! People soon think of the person rather than the animal.

mylittleprincess3455 · 24/06/2012 15:51

Lucy is lovely and i wouldn't worry about the cat connotation. Can't your just spell it differently like Lucie.

Lucie Evelyn is my favourite out of your list of 3.

KateShmate · 24/06/2012 15:58

Lyra is absolutely gorgeous! I've always loved it, but DD1 is an Isla and its a bit too samey, but its such a beautiful name :)

Not too keen on Hazel or Evelyn, bit old fashioned. But as its a family name, something like Lyra Evelyn would be lovely.

Lannie33 · 24/06/2012 16:16

the only name on your list that I dislike is Amber. In Canada/US it has a really "trailer park trash" connotation, so I'm totally put off by that.

Your other names are all very pretty IMO. If i had to choose a name for my own DD I'd go with either Evelyn or Lyra.

CarriMarie · 24/06/2012 17:24

I think you should go with Lucy Evelyn or Amber Evelyn.

meala · 24/06/2012 17:27

Lucy Evelyn is lovely.

NoComet · 24/06/2012 17:31

Amber or Hazel

Evelyn was my annoying Great Aunt and still an old woman name.
It's hard to separate Lyra from PP's brilliant books

Frikadellen · 24/06/2012 18:36

Personally I think Hazel is by far the nicest on your list.
