Help me decide on a boys name for DS2

48 replies

TurkeyDino · 21/06/2012 16:55

DS2 is due in 9 weeks and DH and I are struggling to agree on a name for him.

DS1 is Daniel James

DS2 will have the middle name Laurence, which I love as a first name but it's just too 'posh' for us, it doesn't really fit well for us we don't think.

So far the front runners are;
Oliver
Harry
Ryan

Any preferences or further suggestions?

Our surname is King.

(I know this outs me, hence the name change!)

Maybe aspirational is the better way of putting how we feel about Laurence/Lawrence (will have to check DH's) family spelling of it).

Do you think it would be ok for a boy in a rough North East town?

I like Lawrence as a first name too.
Im not keen on Ryan at all. Like Oliver, but it is sooo popular.
Harry I love, it is ds's name. It is also very popular though.

Surf25 · 22/06/2012 12:34

It would absolutely be ok for a boy in a rough North East town! I honestly would not think twice. To me it is no more 'posh' or aspirational than Harry, honestly! Choose the name you love, thats the most important thing. We chose a name for dd2 that everyone around us seemed to think was 'posh' but names are names and soon the baby/child just is that name and they are so much more than a name anyway!! We chose it because we love it and it has a special meaning for us...and it sounds like laurence does for you too. And laurie is fab! Smile

evamummy · 22/06/2012 12:47

I agree with Surf. Kids couldn't care less if their mates are called Harry, Barry, Lawrence, Rupert or Ryan - as long as it is not a silly name (e.g. Willy, Poopoohead), kids really don't care! If some parents DO worry about poshness/chavness, it is THEIR problem imo.

PepperOnMyPaprikash · 22/06/2012 14:14

Laurence/Laurie is a lovely name; please don't spell it Lawrence, it looks really ugly and just wrong. Think Laurence Olivier!

AdventuresWithVoles · 22/06/2012 14:19

Ryan. Absolutely.
DS1 is yet another DJ & DS2 has a variant on Lawrence for middle name :).

Rubbish about Ryan=naughty name, that's what many told me about Daniel, too!

shouldbedoingtheironing · 22/06/2012 14:22

Agree with Pepper - Lawrence looks more like a surname spelling to me. Nothing wrong with the name Laurence in the UK for a boy!

AgathaTrunchbull · 22/06/2012 18:42

Laurence is lovely and totally agree that the 'w' spelling is ugly. Unless you're planning to move to France...? Laurence is much closer to the original Latin spelling 'Laurentius'.

thebestisyettocome · 22/06/2012 18:53

Harry is great. Not hugely keen on Ryan.

Also like:
Miles;
Matthew;
Max(imilian);
Christian;
Niall;
Mackenzie;

Avoid Luke and Wayne. They wouldn't suit your surname Wink

HalleLouja · 22/06/2012 20:53

Adam
Scott
Matthew
George.

tammy234 · 22/06/2012 22:16

Oliver, Harry and Ryan are all very widely used already. I prefer Laurence/Lawrence but I also find Laurence/Laurie a little too feminine looking/sounding and so I would go for Lawrence.

Luke King Grin.

thegreylady · 24/06/2012 18:32

Just not Ryan...Oliver and Harry are lovely but Lawrence is gorgeous imo.

rachel1970 · 24/06/2012 21:40

Agree that Oliver and Harry are way overused. I don't like Ryan, sorry. So Lawrence is the best imo.

birdofthenorth · 24/06/2012 22:00

I have an adult friend with the same full name as your DS1- just to warn you he got a lot of Danking (rhymes with...) jokes when we were at uni poor thing, though laughed them off with no sign of hurt feelings!

I like Ryan. I think it's rugged & smart at once. Oliver & Harry seem very "of the moment" right now I'm afraid, though both are lovely names.

TurkeyDino · 25/06/2012 07:46

@birdifthenorth: I had a bit of an oversight on the 'danking' and I only realised when someone else said the same thing earlier this month... Still, I had almost 3 years of blissful ignorance Grin

DH remains unconvinced on Laurence as a first name. I made the mistake of discussing names with my parents who hate Oliver, think Harry is ok but not a 'proper' name so we would 'have to' consider Harold or Henry for the birth certificate. I didn't get round to discussing ryan with them as I had realised the error of my ways by that point.

So.... I need to think of a terrible, terrible name and tell everyone we have chosen that and then when baby arrives I will change my mind and everyone will think the new name is great in comparison Smile

rachel1970 · 25/06/2012 12:39

Better still, don't discuss with or tell anyone your name choice until your ds arrives! And, choose a name YOU love!

Stellan · 25/06/2012 14:33

Laurence is by far the best name of the 4 you are considering. There's nothing wrong with Oliver, Harry and Ryan but I've met loads of them already and I'd love to meet a baby Laurence!

TurkeyDino · 25/07/2012 17:54

Hi all,

still no solid decision made! 4 weeks to go (hopefully, if he decides to grace us with his presence in a timely manner)

We are now strongly considering Matthew Laurence King

Thoughts? Are there any major flaws that I have overlooked?

Thanks in advance!

OP posts:
bigbluebump · 25/07/2012 22:33

I'm not keen on Matt, sorry.

rachel234 · 25/07/2012 22:36

Another vote for Laurence/Lawrence. Lovely, classic, elegant but not overused name.

Matthew is ok but a little dull and I too don't like Matt as nickname.

StrawberryMojito · 25/07/2012 22:41

I love Matthew, it is my sons middle name and I almost wish it wasn't because if we have a second I won't know what to call him.

I also really like Laurie and one of the above suggestions of Joshua Laurence King.

GnocchiNineDoors · 25/07/2012 22:42

I live in the North East in a bit of a rough area and still think Lawrence is a nice name.

I also like Harry and think it could be 'just' Harry though I also like Henry.

Christopher
Scott
Guy
Sam
Thomas
Edward

TurkeyDino · 26/07/2012 01:12

Yeah I don't like Matt either or 'matty' which does put a bit of a spanner in the works. He inevitably would be a Matt when he's older wouldn't he?

DH will not agree to Laurence as a first name so that is off the list Sad

MIL has managed to put DH off the name Harry which we were set on week. The reasoning is ridiculous, her niece's DP is called Harry and she doesn't like him...
