What do you think of these girls' names?

Natasha - nickname Sasha
Natalia - nickname Natasha, Sasha
Zara

I love Natasha, but what would other nicknames be? Tasha? (don't like it very much...)

Sasha is a real name, and doesn't have to be a NN for anything.

My DD's friends call her by a contraction of her name that we wouldn't really have chosen. You don't get all that much say about NN as they get older.

So if you really hate Tasha, don't go for Natasha (although she might be called anything by her friends.)

FWIW, I like all your choices. (What about Talia, short for Natalia?)

bruffin · 15/06/2012 14:35

I would say nicknames are something that evolves with the child and not something to be decided before they are even born.
If you call her Sasha, her friends will probably call her Sash!

Sasha is a well established nn for Alexander (I always expect a boy when I hear that name), though it is sometimes used with Alexandra too. Did you want a make/unisex name?

I'd go for Nataliya nn Natasha (nn Tash/a may well happen too). I like Zara as well.

StepOutOfSpring · 15/06/2012 14:57

Natasha - like, also like Nat or Tasha as nicknames. Don't like Sasha and wouldn't associate it with Natasha
Natalia - quite nice, with Talia as nickname. Again, not keen on Sasha and it doesn't sound like it comes from Natalia at all
Zara - lovely :) Go for this one - no nickname problems!

blameitonthecaffeine · 15/06/2012 15:14

My oldest is Natasha but she is nearly 14, it is fairly common in her age group but it seems to be less widely used now. I still love it though. She is never Tash or Tasha. We always call her Natasha and usually everybody else does too. Occasionally Nat but she doesn't like it.

Sasha isn't a name I would associate with Natasha really. How about Alexandra, I think Sasha is a traditional shortening of Alexander for a boy. As a girl it is usually its own name.

Natalia is lovely too. Again I wouldn't shorten it but Talia is nice.

sorry, pressed send too soon.

I also love Zara.

3 lovely names, my order of preference would be Natasha, Zara, Natalia.

I absolutely love Natasha! It is top of our list for girls names, as it means 'born at Christmas' (a pet form of Natalia, I think) and I'm due on 21st December.
I originally suggested it six years ago to DH when I was due on 12th December with DC1 (who did turn out to be a girl). I then kind of went off it, I don't know why, but agreed because DH loved it, that if we had a girl and she came on time she'd be Natasha. She arrived a month early in mid-November, so that was that!
Unless the same happens again this time (please no) a girl will almost certainly be Natasha. I actually like both nn's Tash and Tasha.
Sasha I really like but as a name in it's own right (think as others have said it's from Alexander) but I do like it for a girl.
Also like Zara.
Oh, and love Natalia too but have a niece Natalie so wouldn't use that. Actually, while I think about it, sure that's why I 'went off' Natasha last time - thought it was too similar to Natalie. Love it so much now though that I'd use it anyway....

Good choices!

StepOutOfSpring · 15/06/2012 17:26

Asha would be a nice nickname for Natasha.

Frontpaw · 15/06/2012 17:32

All natashas I know are 'Nat' and Sashas are boys. Natalie or Nanette is rather nice though.

AlexanderSkarsgardIWould · 15/06/2012 17:53

Sasha can also be short for Saskia. All the Natashas I know get their names shortened to Tasha. I think whatever name you pick you've got be be comfortable with all the possible shortenings. For example, I like Frances but I can't use it because it can be shortened to Fran which is what the only other woman DP's ever had a long-term relationship with was called and ex's names, well, it's weird. It wouldn't be practical to go round constantly reminding family members to only use Frances or Frankie. So if you really don't like Tasha I think you've got to take Natasha off the table...

ErikNorseman · 15/06/2012 20:05

You can't force a nickname - and if you are deciding to call her Sasha with Natasha on the BC why not just name her Sasha? Likewise with Natalia nn Natasha Confused what is the point in calling her Natalia?

Having said that, Natalia and Zara are great names.

AlexanderSkarsgardIWould · 15/06/2012 20:32

Apparently the Obamas' Sasha's full name is Natasha.

Lannie33 · 16/06/2012 02:53
  1. Sasha (as its own name)
  2. Zara
  3. Natasha (nn Tash/Tasha/Asha)
Not a fan of Natalia at all. I like Natalie though.
Staceisace · 16/06/2012 03:36

I like Natalia/Talia and Zara. Not so keen on Natasha probably because it's the name of someone I'm not the greatest fan of but I also don't like the nns Tash/Tasha.

bigbluebump · 16/06/2012 07:27

Sasha is a boys name to my ears.
Natasha is lovely. Nat or Tashy are popular nicknames.
Zara is also great.
