Hi, DH and I are expecting a boy in September, we have decided he will be either Mikey or Martin. Would love some opinions please...

I agree with almost everyone else. If I had to choose between these two names, I would go for Martin. (Marty is cute......)

TidyDancer · 15/06/2012 13:35

Mikey is absolutely a no for me. It's a NN. And it's definitely not a name that grows with a man.

I really don't like Martin either tbh, but it's the better of the two by a country mile.

Sorry to be harsh, but you did ask! :)

I like Michael a lot. Mikey is cute- reminds me of whem Samwise Gamgee was a Goonie. And while we're on the subject of great Spielberg movies of the 80s, Martin could be Marty! Or you could go for Eliot?

scummymummy · 15/06/2012 15:47

Only if you pronounce Martin with a g on the end or self-consciously leave the g off farting to be snazzy, 2nd!

hubbahubster · 16/06/2012 06:17

My DH works with one and everyone calls him pikey Mikey. Just because it rhymes. Boys are like that...

Kaekae · 16/06/2012 17:09

Love Michael, my 5 year old sons MN and my 19 year old brothers name. Don't like Mikey though sorry. A no to Martin also.

Lunarlyte · 16/06/2012 18:41

I like Mikey, but if it were me, I would put Michael (or a relevant variant) on his birth certificate. Mikey is a fun name; a cheeky, cute, laddy name, but could you imagine a lawyer or doctor named Mikey?

'Judge Mikey Surname enters the courtroom'.

'Please help me, Dr. Mikey!'

Doesn't work, does it? Great NN, not so great a given name.

DaisySteiner · 16/06/2012 18:44

Do I have to choose? Really?

Staceisace · 16/06/2012 18:51

I'm honestly not a fan of either but I'd prefer Mikey over Martin. Michael would be better as you'd end up calling him Mikey as a baby but then when he's older he could use Michael for important things like job applications etc.

CJfromTheWestWing · 16/06/2012 20:40

Michael, fab. mikey urgh.

mylittleprincess3455 · 16/06/2012 22:20

Mikey

takingiteasy · 16/06/2012 22:32

He can always refer to himself as Michael in adulthood if need be. There isn't a law about not being able to lengthen names is there?

Pooka · 16/06/2012 22:34

Had horrible ex called Martin, but even so prefer it to mikey.

I quite like Michael though.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 17/06/2012 01:05

Mikey is cute - Martin is middle aged man

FairLadyRantALot · 17/06/2012 01:13

neither .... not because of anything...
if you like Mikey at least use Michael .... and Mikey as a nickname.
If you really don't like Michael...than go for Martin , not that I like the name, but well...I am just thinking of little Mikey and Martin sending out applications to UCAS or for a job, and sorry, but Mikey won't be taken seriously.
