Jonas and Linus?

I have to find a name for Jonas's little brother (now I know bump is a boy).

Linus is growing on me and DH, but it's still a bit of an audacious choice where we come from (family hated it, a few friends liked).

Do you have any thoughts on that? Are the names too matchy-matchy?

We like it because apart from having to work in several languages) it can't be shortened, sounds "clean", has only one spelling, and we think they go well together. And also it's not a popular name, but it's known (like Jonas, there aren't many around, but everybody knows the name)

Do you have any other ideas following these requirements?

Jonas and Martin?
Jonas and ...?

Seth? Saul? Isaiah? Jed?

I don't dislike Linus, though it's a bit too much like Sinus for my liking.

Dollydowser · 11/06/2012 22:39

Isn't Linus the flea bag in Charlie Brown?

schroedingersdodo · 11/06/2012 22:49

Devora, I'd like to avoid other biblical name if possible (and although I like Seth, these names don't work in Portuguese...). Sinus doesn't bother me too much, but it's always good to know how he will be teased when he grows up :)

Dolly, Linus is the one with the blanket. (maybe you're referring to Pigpen?)

Linus is a bit wet imo. To me it brings to mind the Peanuts wimp with the blanket and evil Ben from Lost

There was a Nobel prize winner Linus Pauling. There still is Linus Torvalds the inventor of the Linux operating system for computers, and who may have been named after Linus Pauling or as he says himself it might have been after the Peanuts cartoon. Either way, seems quite a good name to go with Jonas.

sonniboo · 11/06/2012 22:59

Love Linus!

Vicky2011 · 11/06/2012 23:01

People will assume that either you or your DH are a geek. Not that's a problem of course but just so you know.

Badgerina · 11/06/2012 23:14

I like it! It is a bit matchy-matchy with Jonas though.

mathanxiety · 12/06/2012 05:45

I know brothers Jonas, Tomas, and Mikulas, which I think it's a Czech form of Nicholas.

Jonas and Nico
Jonas and Casimiro
Jonas and Gaspar
Jonas and Leo

I really like Linus though.

mathanxiety · 12/06/2012 05:49

Jonas and Dominic?

sonniboo · 12/06/2012 09:26

Why Greek Vicky? I might assume a Socrates Pikolakes is Greek or a Constantine Acropolis, but Linus? No.

bananaramma · 12/06/2012 09:29

I think Linus is great!

schroedingersdodo · 12/06/2012 13:57

Fuckity, what do you mean by "wet"?

LaVolcan we thought of these references, and all the (few) people we mentioned the name mentioned one of them too. I like them, to be honest.

Vicky DH IS a geek - not that he uses linux, but we are both on the geek-ish side, so it's ok :)

Math I've seen Dominic here on MN yesterday and considered it. But the ending clashes with the family names. If we would go for a "ic" ending, I think I prefer Eric.

Thanks for all your suggestions, and if you have any more, please keep them coming!

(any other geek name? Pascal, maybe? :)

Jonas is nice. Linus does immediately make me think of the blanket carrying boy from Charlie Brown, but it's a kind of cool name if I put that association to one side.

Don't got for Pascal though. Pascal is a name that is popular in deepest, rural Ireland. It makes me think of elderly, ruddy faced farmers who wear jumpers under their blazers and tell you that you've got 'fine child bearing hips'.

schroedingersdodo · 12/06/2012 17:45

Hahaha, squoosh, love the description!

We never thought seriously about Pascal (but I had no idea about it being popular among Irish elderly farmers), I just mentioned it as another "geek" name (because of the programming language)

Way back when, there was a radio programme on RTE presented by Paschal Mooney. It featured mostly Irish Country and Western iirc, Philomena Begley etc., and a segment called the Lonely Hearts Club that was hilarious ('please send picture of tractor' style).

He has been a Senator in the Irish Senate for a good few years now.

DS was very nearly Linus, it's my favourite boy's name... but I had a last minute change of mind just before the registration deadline.

Pros: gorgeous name, nice Scandi heritage, cool nerdy associations

Cons: the lame wimpy kid from Peanuts.

I couldn't do it to my lovely baby... I called him Luke.

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 12/06/2012 23:16

Love Linus!

schroedingersdodo · 13/06/2012 16:05

noclue Jonas was also supposed to have another name, but during the last weeks we started to have a change of heart and then when we was born I thought he looked like Jonas.

So, as you see, anything can happen until mid-November...

Anyway, I'm happy to know some people like Linus!

And 2 people think it's too matchy-matchy :)
