Philo and a few others.

Due v soon and still undecided re boy's name.

I often like names ending in an 'o' like Hugo, Leo and more unusual/ exotic ones like Lorenzo, Cosmo.

In principal, I really like the name Philo but I'm not so sure in practice because of possible pronunciation confusion and similarities to Fido/ Filo pastry, etc.
So, am I being hormonal and desperate or is it a good, useable name?

Also have a few others to run past MN:
Matthias, Ezra (? too Biblical as we are not Christian), Fabian, Ivo, Roman (have heard the 'c' word associated with this- is it?).

Many thanks for your opinions.

I really don't like Philo.

Matthias is lovely.

Ezra too.Both excellent choices.

Fabian is horrid.

Ivo is ok.

Roman is great. Not at all 'chavvy' imho.Quite the opposite I'd say.

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 10/06/2012 12:36

You're definately in pastry territory there. Love Matthias, Ivo and Roman.

poppydaisy · 10/06/2012 12:39

Love Cosmo, Hugo, Ivo, Roman and Fabian.

I know a Thilo - think his parents are German.

AgathaTrunchbull · 10/06/2012 12:48

Quite like Philo. Lots of Greek philosophers. He'd end up being called Phil, of course!

Matthias is okay. Ezra's seriously old testament, so not for me. Fabian's a bit boaters and loafers. Ivo's nice. Roman... hmm. Not chavvy, but a bit pointless. He's going to get jokes about sandals and togas.

Cosmo's a very cool name. Or how about Cosimo? Very Medici.

MagdalenaAlec · 10/06/2012 13:51

Not keen on Philo, it immediately thought "filo pastry".

I love love love Ezra! Really think it is a fantastic name!
Like Hugo v much too.
Ivo, Leo, Fabian are just fine.
Don't like Lorenzo, Cosmo, Roman.

What about Flavian instead of Fabian? I am also thinking Paolo, Ezio, Timeo, Helios (Greek for sun.. quite a cool meaning!), Lucio...

MarySA · 10/06/2012 14:38

I don't like Philo at all. I've never heard of it used as a child's name. Hugo is fine though.

thegreylady · 10/06/2012 14:52

Milo

bighooraytoday · 10/06/2012 20:09

Right, although I like Philo, it is off the list as I think it won't be an easy name to bear.

I like Ivo a lot.
Another 'o' name that I'm fond of is Inigo. Any opinions on that one?

Philo = dreadful, sorry. Also hate Ezra and Roman. Ivo sounds unfinished.
I like Matthias and Fabian.
Like Inigo (waits for the six fingered man quotes etc).

bighooraytoday · 10/06/2012 20:36

That's the Princess Bride, right, remus?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/06/2012 20:50

Right!

It's a great name. I love Westley too, to continue the PB theme.

NappiesandGladrags · 10/06/2012 20:52

Again Philo to me is too close to the pastry!

Ezra is very unusual and i ADORE it, I have a Gabriel and we are not religious, we also had Saul shortlisted and Jonah which are biblical aswell!

Roman's good too, OH has mentioned this before

I've been told Fabian is 'pretentious' although i admit to liking it ALOT, Matthius i'm not sure of personally

Ivo sorry not my cup of tea!

Lunarlyte · 10/06/2012 21:52

I think you'd be setting your boy up for a lifetime of correcting people on the pronunciation of his name with Philo.

My personal preference from your list is Ezra.

Lunarlyte · 10/06/2012 21:54

Nappies btw I'm totally with you on boys names. Gabriel is my absolute fave for a boy and should a son ever come into our lives, I'd call him Gabriel :) (with Ezra as a real temptation!)

bighooraytoday · 11/06/2012 09:44

Not as keen on Westley, remus.

nappies- I like Gabriel but have a friend with one.
I must admit to liking some names commonly considered pretentious (Fabian, etc)!

Nappies I love your list! We are not religious either and there is a strong possibility DS2 will be Gabriel Ezra Maurice. After all, biblical names are the most international names..I do not see why they should label us as religious. But then again DH did knock Baptiste and Clement off the list for being too religious, so..

I have never heard of Inigo.. is it short for Ignatius? (I am curious)

ChickensHaveNoLips · 11/06/2012 13:06

I love Ivo. There was a twin featured in 'Child of Our Time' called Ivo, and he was scrumptious.

ellesabe · 11/06/2012 19:13

Not keen on Philo I'm afraid.

How would you pronounce it? File-oh or feel-oh?

It sounds made-up to me. Sorry.

YoyoMama · 11/06/2012 21:27

i also like names ending in an 'o'

how about
Pablo
Pavlo
Emilio
Milo

PercyFilth · 11/06/2012 22:35

Enzo is cool. Could be from Lorenzo or Vincenzo.

bighooraytoday · 12/06/2012 21:01

ellesabe- tis file-oh as far as I know but it is off the list anyway :)

Thank you for the other 'o' suggestions.

My baby we named Philo, (fy-low). We love the uniqueness of the name and it didn't take much correcting for people to get it right. Haven't had anybody mention the pastry aside from my grandmother one time while I was pregnant. I love the fact that Philo is Greek in origin and means loving.

FayCarew · 25/06/2024 16:46

Philo - pastry. feel-o?
Matthias - Math-eye-as or Matt-ee-as?
Ezra - popular, Old Testament book
Fabian - not keen. Shortens to Fay/Fabes
Ivo - Eye-vo or Ee-vo?
Roman - seems a bit downmarket and doesn't sound nice

Duckies · 26/06/2024 15:24

I like Ivo and love Inigo.
