Romany

Both DH and I are not compromising on our favourite names so I need to convince him that Romany is much better than his favourite, Serena. Is it worth my efforts though or is DH right and it's a bit naff?

I didn't know that was a name - I've heard of Romily before though.
Isn't that a bit like calling someone "French"?
Can't say I like the idea of Romany as a name, sorry.

happystory · 07/06/2012 13:17

Have heard of Roman as a name but not Romany.

MsOliveOyl · 07/06/2012 13:18

Why would you name a child after a whole people? It's a nice word but I just instantly think of gypsies.

savoycabbage · 07/06/2012 13:18

I know a Gypsy so I suppose it's a bit like that.

thegreylady · 07/06/2012 13:20

I love Romany and am less keen on Serena [I was a teacher and it has unfortunate connotations for me]

littlemissnormal · 07/06/2012 13:20

My DDs middle name is Romany, but I also like Romy and Romily. All pretty and different!

squoosh · 07/06/2012 13:23

Never heard it used as a person's name before. It's a language and a people.

PrettyInDecadence · 07/06/2012 13:23

Hmm mixed reviews! I really love the nn Romy too, but as a stand alone name it doesn't go with surname and not too fond of Romilly.

I know a teenage girl called Romany. I prefer it to Serena.

Roma?

chocoroo · 07/06/2012 13:38

I like Romany. I have a Romilly which I think is even more gorgeous :-)

squoosh · 07/06/2012 13:43

Romy is very pretty, shame you can't use it by itself. I'm not a huge fan of Romilly either, reminds me of Rommel the Nazi.

SugarBatty · 07/06/2012 13:45

My ds is Romay so its a bit similar. I think its a down the middle name I can tell lots don't like it! I do like serena too though!

StepOutOfSpring · 07/06/2012 16:34

Love Serena, not keen on Romy/Romilly/Romany. If you use Romany you might get tired of the "as in gypsy?" comments.

StepOutOfSpring · 07/06/2012 16:35

How about Sabreena, Rowena, Rowan?

ThePathanKhansWitch · 07/06/2012 16:36

I think Romana means Pomegranate in Arabic.(waits to be corrected).

PrettyInDecadence · 07/06/2012 17:52

Rowan's nice, but I think I prefer it for a boy. Could be one to consider though :)

bamboozledAardvark · 07/06/2012 22:34

Romy's nice, probably prefer it as a stand alone name but nothing wrong with Romany

lisaro · 07/06/2012 22:41

Serena is fine. Let's just say Romany isn't.

Badsquishy · 07/06/2012 23:16

I have a Romany. It is a fantastic name!!!! The only comment I ever have is " what a lovely and unusual name."

Stellan · 08/06/2012 19:24

There are so many names in the world and yet you want to name your daughter after an ethnic group? Seems a bit like naming your child Berber or Maori or Inuit to me. All are great words to say but are they really names?

Romilly, Romana or Romy would be better, in my opinion. Romany sounds pretty but what's wrong with naming your child something that's actually a proper name?

MsOliveOyl · 08/06/2012 20:47

Oh man, Inuit would be a great name for a boy! Maybe one day these words will lose their meaning and people will use them as names. Maybe that's what's happening with Romany.

PrettyInDecadence · 08/06/2012 22:11

Romy on its own clashes with our surname and I find Romilly quite a weak name IYSWIM? Romana is nice though.

I like Ramona.
