Boy shortlist, I'm struggling!

So we had tons of girl names that we both loved, but have found out we're having a boy and 3 weeks later we're still no closer to something we're both happy with. We do have a few that we agree on though:

Victor
Vincent
Hector

I really like Dexter, Tobias, Kurt and Theodore, but have been told 'absolutely not' to all of those.

I actually really like Victor, but am worried about the context - we live in a market town in the home counties and I'm worried that here it just sounds really aspirational (nothing wrong with that, but it's really not who we are) and perhaps a bit up itself.

Any thoughts would be good!

Vincent is lovely, I love the nn Vinnie! If you're DP isn't keen on Tobias or Theodore could you try to persuade him with just the nn so ask him if he likes Toby or Theo (if that's what you would use day to day)?

I'm not fussed about Victor or Hector, but don't think they would be seen as aspirational what with names like Beatrice being really popular. Any of your list would be completely useable IMO :)

Might you also like Barnaby, Benjamin, Stanley, Arthur or Leo?

Thumbwitch · 04/06/2012 12:17

DS has Vincent as a middle name but I wouldn't use it as a first name. I like Victor and Hector though.
Don't like Dexter or Kurt, like Tobias and love Theodore.

PrettyPrinceofParties · 04/06/2012 12:17

I really like Hector.

We were the same as you. I knew what we'd all a girl but not many boys names we liked. My dh suddenly said what about Huey and we both loved it. For his middle name I asked dh to name some musicians he liked, first one he said was Morton Subotnick (I have no idea either!) ad we both liked the name Morton. In fact that nearly became his first name.

usualsuspect · 04/06/2012 12:20

Dexter, Tobias, Kurt I like

Hector is awful

PrettyPrinceofParties · 04/06/2012 12:28

Dexter is part of my surname, and LOADS of dogs are called Dexter (and a fictitious serial killer).

Overlovedbyfrantickitty · 04/06/2012 12:37

Haha, I did think about whether Dexter was a dog's name, but I know so many dogs with people-names it's so hard to avoid! I don't think I'd be allowed it anyway though so I guess it doesn't matter.

I do quite like Stanley as well, but memories of my Dad and step mum laughing over a little boy at my (very boringly-named) nephew's birthday party being called Stanley have kind of put me off...

I love Victor, and Vic is nice for a boy and man.

misslinnet · 04/06/2012 20:03

I don't like Hector as a name because of the meaning of it as a word.

Victor and Vincent are both nice.

Also, reading your Stanley story, I would try to ignore your dad / step-mums opinion on names. IME, the older generation can be a bit our of touch with what's popular now (unless they work with children of course).

My aunty, for example, told me about her friend's new grandson with a "very unusual name". The grandson was called Jack Hmm
My in-laws also insisted that Isabel was a freakishly unusual and mockable name when DH let slip our girls name shortlist.

Nagoo · 04/06/2012 20:09

I really like Victor and I don't think 'Vic' sounds aspirational at all, no offence Grin

JubileeTatWearer · 04/06/2012 20:12

We really liked Dexter, and if we hadn't already chosen a family name set in stone, DS would have been Dexter. Regardless of the fictional serial killer.

CustardIsMyNemesis · 04/06/2012 20:20

Ooh, I love Tobias!

Stanley would have been DD's middle name if she was a DS.

Lora1982 · 04/06/2012 22:07

I wanted Dexter after a massive series-athon still love it. dp is in charge of the name though (obviously i get the final say and have rubbished gabriel) hes thinking isaac now. Op I quite like Vincent over the other two x

shoobidoo · 05/06/2012 00:05

Victor is lovely. Really don't like Hector!

Hector is truly dire. Vincent and Victor aren't too bad.
