"Spirited" Boys Names!

Hi folks, long time viewer, first time poster!

Hubby and I have baby number one on the way, we know it's a boy and are looking for a name that is unusual , Scottish and makes a statement (hopefully not that we're alcoholics! Haha).

Anyway, we are both Whisky fans, indeed we met through mutual Whisky Society friends.

With that in mind we were thinking of a Whisky themed name. Now, there are some fairly obvious ones, Ben, Glen, even Moray (pronounced Murray) or Rinnes, but they don't really resonate with our tastes.

We currently have a short list of Lagavulin, Laphroaig, or, if this is too "out there", Peater (I guess an alternative spelling of a classic).

What do you think?

I think it's a little, um, eccentric.

waitingtobeamummy · 03/06/2012 15:54

I think as long as it doesn't scream "whisky" It's a lovely idea. Do you live in Scotland? Just thinking if not, some names might be a little bit difficult to pronounce.

MsMinx · 03/06/2012 16:03

Haha, I guess it is but names like Chardonnay have become fairly common place in recent years!

We do live in Scotland and my maiden name was hard to spell/pronounce so I can relate to that but, to be honest, that's not a huge concern.

Just choosing Peter and calling him "Peaty" is an option but a bit of a cop out!

I'm not sure why you would want to chose a name based around your whiskey hobby tbh. I might be being a bit thick here, but I don't get it.

LynetteScavo · 03/06/2012 16:05

How do you pronounce them?

They are unusual. I have no idea if I like them or not. Confused

LynetteScavo · 03/06/2012 16:06

I did suggest some names relating to DH's main interest. He told me I was bonkers.

mawbroon · 03/06/2012 16:09

No, no, no. Are you serious?

MsMinx · 03/06/2012 16:13

Lagavulin is simply La-ga-voo-lin and Laphroig is pronounced La-froyg.

Sarcalogos, not thick at all, as I said, Scottish and unusual were key preferences and Whisky has played a role in our relationship (ha, and quite likely in the act of creation!) so it seemed appropriate.

Jamieson - isn't that a whiskey? All sorts of nns there and Scottish too. Jamie, Jim.

Sarcalogos · 03/06/2012 16:17

I think id be a bit Blush if I thought my parents had named me after something that affected my conception.

Although Scottish and unusual I get, how about, Redd or Torrey.

MsMinx · 03/06/2012 16:22

Jamieson's is indeed Whiskey, and Irish, and not Scottish Whisky!

Thanks for the suggestions Sarcalogos, we may well go down an alternative route without the Whisky theme but for the moment we're exploring this route, aware it's a little unusual.

Grin
Llareggub · 03/06/2012 16:48

I hope for your sake neither of you become actual alcoholics. Your poor kid will end up detesting his name.

puds11 · 03/06/2012 16:54

Lagavulin makes me think vulva Grin thats probably just me though.
How about Malt?

LynetteScavo · 03/06/2012 17:07

Oooh, Malt is good.

CakeBump · 03/06/2012 17:16

Erm sorry, but I think the whole thing is a terrible idea and unbelievably tacky.

Your son will have to live with this name, be kind... He is a person in his own right, not an extension of your hobby!

tartyflette · 03/06/2012 17:16

Oh dearie dearie me. There are some beautiful Scottish names for boys around (and girls too) -- surely you can find something a bit better then Peaty (he's gonna be called compost at school) or Malt ( er, loaf?) or indeed the name of a branded consumer product!
Might this be helpful?

What a great idea. You and your DH sound like you have a great sense of fun about you and I suspect that you will spread that joy into your life. I hope you find a suitable name. I personally don't like whisky so have no input.

PrettyPrinceofParties · 03/06/2012 17:24

Oban, Jura, Arron or Tobermory. Grin

TheonlyoneIknow · 03/06/2012 17:28

WinkyWinkola · 03/06/2012 17:29

Torran.

CherryBlossom27 · 03/06/2012 17:32

I think it's a good way to choose a name! I haven't got any suggestions as I don't really know any Scottish whiskys, but I think as long as it sounds like a name and not just a drink it's good e.g. Stella is a nice name, but also a drink and I don't think it's tacky like Chardonnay for example.

nooka · 03/06/2012 17:35

I think being called after a recognisable rand of whiskey would be something of a burden, and as a concept is really quite naff. Possibly OK for a middle name, but really pet naming not person naming territory. If you found something so obscure that you'd need to be a fellow whiskey society member to recognise the whiskey relationship that might be OK, assuming that the name was in addition nice sounding.
