"Spirited" Boys Names!

Hi folks, long time viewer, first time poster!

Hubby and I have baby number one on the way, we know it's a boy and are looking for a name that is unusual , Scottish and makes a statement (hopefully not that we're alcoholics! Haha).

Anyway, we are both Whisky fans, indeed we met through mutual Whisky Society friends.

With that in mind we were thinking of a Whisky themed name. Now, there are some fairly obvious ones, Ben, Glen, even Moray (pronounced Murray) or Rinnes, but they don't really resonate with our tastes.

We currently have a short list of Lagavulin, Laphroaig, or, if this is too "out there", Peater (I guess an alternative spelling of a classic).

What do you think?

Glen? Would only work if your last name happened to be Fiddich or Morangie I guess though.

Surf25 · 03/06/2012 20:48

Yes to Torran - great choice as an actual name (!) and I think it's lovely, very Scottish and not popular but not totally unknown either.

How about Allan like Macallan? Or...

Jura
Arran (guessing will be too popular for your taste!)
Oban

AdventuresWithVoles · 03/06/2012 20:56

La-Froyg is simply dreadful.

There's a Laughlin in my family tree, dunno if there's a whiskey to go with that, though.

Nospringflower · 03/06/2012 20:56

We always said we would call a son Oban (nothing to do with whisky though) but didnt and I sometimes regret it. Think it would make a good name.

FrauGrau · 03/06/2012 20:57

Usquebaugh

Mollydoggerson · 03/06/2012 21:03

Dash - Dashiel.

fallingandlaughing · 04/06/2012 10:59

Are you meaning this as a first name. Seems cruel. This is middle name territory. You might get away with Talisker as a first name.

For a dog.

FizzyLaces · 04/06/2012 11:07

How bonkers Grin

Campbell is a nice name.

PrunellaDeVille · 04/06/2012 13:30

Tobermory?
or what about Macallan, Arran, Blair, Athol, Elgin, Keith

FurCough · 04/06/2012 13:35

Peater? I don't know if that's lunacy or inspired.

Incaminka · 04/06/2012 13:38

What about namin him after some of the whisky-producing islands/regions or the rivers that feed the distilleries?

FurCough · 04/06/2012 13:41

how about Todd - short for toddy?

Incaminka · 04/06/2012 13:46

If you are totally wedded to brand names, male sure it's a single malt, not a blend, or you'll have doomed him to a life of ostracism from the upper echelons of the whisky fraternity. Wonder if you could tuck a vintage year in as a second name?

AWomanCalledHorse · 04/06/2012 13:54

Jura? MN, not a first name
How about naming him after someone important in the world of Whiskey, but not so obvious to anyone who isn't you or DH?

misslinnet · 04/06/2012 14:10

Lagavulin and Laphroaig scream whisky at me having been around all the distilleries on Islay

I'd have serious reservations about using a single malt brand name as a first name, particularly a distinctive one like Lagavulin or Laphroaig.

And Peater sounds like you can't spell Peter.

iloveberries · 04/06/2012 14:11

oh.my.god.

awful idea

SoupDragon · 04/06/2012 14:15

What do I think? I think you are nuts and it would be cruel to your future child.

When naming a child please remember that they have to live with it, not you.

HerMajestyQueenHillyzabethII · 04/06/2012 14:21

Johnnie Walker.

Blush sorry.

ripsishere · 04/06/2012 14:23

Famous Grouse.

pictish · 04/06/2012 14:24

Laphroaig is brilliant!

I love it!!!

Milngavie · 04/06/2012 14:26

AWomanCallexHorse - I know of a baby called Jura! Also one called Uist. Nothing wrong with either IMO.

Where we live there are 3 whisky distilleries but none of them would make a good boys name unfortunately.

BlingBubbles · 04/06/2012 14:31

I know a Talisker, Tal for short, the name grows on you, I like it.

Hopandaskip · 04/06/2012 16:35

maybe if it is one that is less obviously a whiskey. I like Callan and Torran. I really really don't like your short list. Sorry.

You do realise that if you pick one of those for all his life people will roll their eyes when they hear the name and pretty much no-one will be able to spell it unless he points out the connection and even then people will have trouble.

BunnyLebowski · 04/06/2012 16:40

Dalwhinnie?

Ballantine?

Johnnie? Walker?

Auchentoshan?? With Auchie as a nn??

Monkey Shoulder??

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 04/06/2012 19:23
