anyone know an Octavia, and what does it get shortened to? I love it, but want a nickname option too...

DD has a close friend called Octavia and she is known by her class mates as Tavi (pronounced Tayvi)

V-ee ?

BellaOfTheBalls · 03/06/2012 15:35

I know an Octavia known as Via (vee-ah), or Vee.

If DC2 is a girl and we choose Octavia (instead of Adelaide, nn Ada) we will probably call her Vinny, as I am not fond of Tavi (reminds me of the horrible wannabe Anna Wintour :( )

My daughter is 13 and is an Octavia. I didn't want it shortened but when she was 6 and joined a new gym class - all the girls were asked to introduce themselves - after hearing 'evie, maddie, beccie...'etc, feeling a little different she turned around and said ' I'm occie' and the name has stuck ever since. I loathed it at first but over the years it has grown on me and I can't imagine her known as anything else. I'm probably the only person who calls her Octavia , I still love the name as much as when I first chose it and think it's beautiful.

Booette · 03/06/2012 20:43

I would probably go for Tavi/Tavy/Tavie.

Creany172 · 03/06/2012 20:43

How about Avi - pronounced ayvee. I have an Olivia who gets called Livi and an Imogen who gets called Imi. I also have a Sophie and she gets called Soph.

That was my first choice if we were having a girl (it's a boy, and we're totally stumped)! I love it and you should totally use it. Ours would have been shortened to Tavi (tay-vee) or Tavia.

TheGrandOldDuke · 04/06/2012 20:43

My personal obsession with nicknames is that mine name doesn't, and I always HATED that. I wanted to be 'katy' or 'vicky' or something cutesy ending in 'y'. Instead I had what I think is a horrible name that doesn't easily shorten despite being 3syllables long. So I don't want to burden our daughter similarly, in case she feels the same.

I don't know what to go for.

Which is best, Octavia, Arabella or Cordelia?

Octavia is great loads of fab nn options - yy to Vivi (natch Wink ) but Tavy is fab too, as is Tay.

I love Teifi (pronounced Tayvi & nn Tay) as a name in itself.
