Theodore...which nickname?

Considering Theodore but torn between Theo or Teddy as the "everyday" name! What do you think? I love them both but with Theo being so popular is Teddy a better alternative?

I'm in Ireland and have never met a Theodore/Theo! I don't think it is particularly popular here which is good for me! Though I'm sure it will trickle over eventually!

i know of two toddler theos, its really not that popular tho may be more so in some parts of the uk, but obviously not in Ireland, so your Theo can be the trailblaizer for the name as mine was i actually had someone ask me when ds1 was about 6, if they minded if we used the name theo!! i was like NO not at all :)

Love Theodore and would choose Teddy as nn for baby and little boy. I suspect they will be Theo as they are older though, which is also lovely. Although I prefer Ted or Teddy.

From a German/ European perspective I would pronounce Theodore as 'Tayo- dor', so nn tayo

We have Theodore , he is an official Teddy with close friends/family but from about the age of 7-8 he decided that Teddy is childish and started calling himself Theo in new situations (i.e. when he moved school at 9 he wanted to be known as Theo).
As much as I like Theo, DS is a Teddy for me :)

Forgive me but isn't Ted/Teddy short/nn for Edward? Not sure I would associate it at all with Theodore?

Theodore and Theo are both adorable though and I'd go for them!

Teddy was actually a name after Theodore - the toy Teddy came afterwards

It’s a nickname for both but actually it’s a nickname for Theodore and Edward came much later afterwards

Ted is my top boys name (just Ted no longer version). But as a nickname for Theodore I would choose Theo, I think Teddy is quickly becoming as popular.

Theo is the natural shortening for Theodore.

Teddy is a toy 🐻 and bears no resemblance to Theodore!

@Grufallosfriends I know this is a zombie thread but you’re wrong! Look into the history of the teddy bear and you’ll see the connection to Theodore. The teddy bear was named after Theodore Roosevelt.

You could also go with Teo and being a bit more original, especially as both Theo and Teddy are quite popular in some areas.

I like all the nicknames but would choose Teddy as it's less used than Theo, and love Ted as well, especially as he gets older. I know a young Theodore who goes by Theo mostly but also gets called his full name and gets affectionately called Teddy sometimes as well in the family.

Theo at a push, but they're both so popular I would avoid. Too try-hard. The middle class version of "Alfie".

DH and I both love this name but we've had to take it off our list because I love Teddy/Ted (and he doesn't) and he loves Theo (and I don't) 😔

Surprised to see people think Theo is more common than Teddy. I know about 5 small Teddies and it seems to be a huge trend at the moment.

We have a Theodore. Also referred to as Theodor-able (but not in front of anyone as he is in Y7 and that would not be cool at all!)

He is called Teddy by everyone. Occasionally Ted.

Great name. No one else in school called Ted or Teddy and only 1 Theo so far and he is in Year 5. So not as popular around these parts (SW London / Surrey) as threads like this sometimes suggest.
