I'm in my early stages with my second pregnancy and have begun thinking about names, what are the general thoughts on these:

Phineas
Finnian
Monte
Rafferty
Charlie
Leo
Archie
Felix
Oscar

Girls
Bella
Minnie
Jemima
Felicity
Poppy
Beatrice

Similar name suggestions would be gratefully received.

how about scarlette
abigail
Beth
katie
kitty

Littlecherublegs · 28/05/2012 16:26

I like Rafferty (like Rafa) and Leo from your boys, and Beatrice from your girls.

Dont mind Archie or Oscar though these are quite popular at the moment.
Bella and Minnie dont seem like full names in their own right IYKWIM.

Not keen on the others.

Phineas - I love this quirky Biblical name! Easy to pronounce and 'looks interesting'. Potential downsides: Phineas and Ferb (Disney TV programme), Harry Potter character, Julia Roberts' son's name (with a slight spelling variation, if my memory serves). Balancing everything, I'd probably steer clear personally even though I think it's fab

Finnian - OK

Monte - Not sure how this is pronounced - like Monty? If so, spell it Monty

Rafferty - I like this in the abstract but probably only works if you're Jude Law

Charlie - As a nickname for Charles, great - love it (very popular, I think)

Leo - Love it but very popular, I think

Archie - Blah

Felix - OK

Oscar - Love it

Bella - What I want to name my dog! Obviously I think it's very cute. Bit Twilight though and probably nicest as a nickname for Isabella, Arabella, Mirabella, etc.

Minnie - Um, don't want to be crass but I've heard of this as a word for female genitals and what if she is maxi, not mini?

Jemima - Love it

Felicity - Love it

Poppy - OK

Beatrice - Love it

Also wanted to check how do you pronounce Phineas:

FIN-ee-us

lovemygirlivy · 28/05/2012 16:43

I would pronounce it Finn-a-us - would that be strange - or is it just a variation on the prononciation like po-tay-to / po - ta-to

Felix or Charles/Charlie for a boy, Isabella/Felicity/Poppy/Beatrice for a girl :)

Phineas - don't like Finn names
Finnian - again, don't like Finn names
Monte - Carlo
Rafferty - frilly
Charlie - nice as nickname for Charles
Leo - nice as nickname (Leopold?)
Archie - OK as nickname but long version would have to be Archibald
Felix - great name, like
Oscar - not keen

Bella - OK as nickname for Isabella
Minnie - no
Jemima - no
Felicity - like
Poppy - like
Beatrice - like

lovemygirlivy · 28/05/2012 20:34

Monte is pronounced Monty - my grandfather spelt it Monte as in (monteague), so we would use that spelling if we decided that was the name.

Finn or Oscar are both nice, although not uncommon now. Poppy and Bella are OK too, but the same comment applies. I'm not keen on any of the others, sorry.

QueenEdith · 28/05/2012 20:36

Wy not go for Monteague in full - I've never heard it before but think it's great.

manicinsomniac · 28/05/2012 20:49

Phineas - not keen, sounds quite pretentious
Finnian - okay, prefer Finn or Finlay
Monte - Only seen it spelt Monty. It's quite sweet. Montgomery for formal?
Rafferty - Doesn't sound like a human boy to me. Not a British one anyway
Charlie - like it. Would christen Charles
Leo - like it
Archie - like it
Felix - really like it
Oscar love it. One of my favourite boys names

Girls
Bella - pretty. Would use Annabella, Arabella or Isabella for formal version
Minnie - don't like it. In the words of Ross Geller 'you say Minnie ... you hear mouse.'
Jemima - like it
Felicity - love it
Poppy - it's ok
Beatrice - not keen

Similar boys - Alfie, Andre, Benedict, Caspian, Cosmo, Frederick, Gabriel, Henry, Jefferson, Luca, Leon, Marcus, Nathaniel, Owen, Preston, Quinn, Raphael, Theo, Zachary

Girls are harder as I would say Minnie and Poppy are at the opposite end of the spectrum to Beatrice but how about:
Alyssa, Bianca, Chloe, Daisy, Eloise, Francesca, Gabriella, Heidi, Isla, Jessica, Katie, Lara, Molly, Nina, Olivia, Phoebe, Rosie, Sadie, Thea, Verity, Xanthe, Zoe

emmyloo2 · 29/05/2012 06:58

Phineas - I don't mind this but I think it is too close to all the Finns that are currently out there
Finnian - see above
Monte - only as nn for Montgomery-

Rafferty - too trendy
Charlie - only as nn for Charles
Leo - ok
Archie - too trendy/popular
Felix - love this
Oscar - like but too popular

Girls
Bella - definitely not
Minnie - definitely not
Jemima - dislike
Felicity - nice
Poppy - nup too popular
Beatrice - fabulous!

So Felix and Beatrice would be my picks.
