I have come up with a shortlist but am not sure all of them go with our surname which is Bell. Please can you cast your eye over it and let me know what you think both of the names and how they go with our last name. I fear some just don't sound right or don't sound good when abbreviated. Other suggestions are welcome.

Fiona
Edie
Matilda
Martha

Matilda Bell sounds best IMHO, with Martha & Fiona next - Fifi Bell sounds really sweet

I love Edie , but I'm biased as my DD has a similar name:) but I don't like it with Bell at all

HTH

sorry not made that clear Blush- Fifi as a NN for Fiona that is

flagnogbagnog · 24/05/2012 12:29

Matilda Bell sounds lovely!

Lunarlyte · 24/05/2012 12:33

Agree - Fifi Bell is the one id go with, but then I'm a fan of very girly names. Fiona Bell as the full name would serve her best in adulthood.

In contrast, I'm not sure about Matilda as 'Tilly Bell' doesn't sound right to me. Edie Bell for the same reason.

Thanks all.

rockinhippy and Lunarlyte - I was concerned that Fi Bell sounds too much like 'feeble'. What do you think?

TheJoyfulPuddleJumper - do you think most people would think of 'edible' if we were to call her Edie - this is our fav and it's making me sad we might not be able to use it because of this!

Really sorry, but I agree with Joyful Edie Bell just doesn't sound right to me either - edible wasn't my first thought, but I can see that it would be at School, DCs will make NNs out of anything they can & that kind of hands it on a plate & could well have them biting her - perhaps sounds OTT, but IME not so

yes Fi Bell does, but Fifi sounds lovely & the 2 Fionas I know, both go by Fifi

& I agree Tilly Bell sounds wrong too, but NN Tilda or even Matti still sound lovely :)

rockinhippy · 24/05/2012 12:58

What about Edie as a middle name ?? - Fiona Edie Bell sounds good, as does Matilda Edie Bell

BlueChampagne · 24/05/2012 13:34

Much as I like Fiona, I know one who's nickname is Fono, which might make you think twice with your surname. Or just embrace it! Grin

Lunarlyte · 24/05/2012 13:54

Sunny, I'm with Rockin and Joyful: Edie Bell doesn't sound right. I don't mean any offence when I say this as you've said it's your preferred name but Edie Bell does indeed sound like 'edible' and I dont think it's the best of the name choices to bestow on your babba.

However, you are in control to a certain extent with regard to NN. If you introduce her as, say, Fiona "but we call her Fifi" it's unlikely she'll be called Fi. Same with Matilda, which Rockin savvily pointed out can be Tilda (prefer Tilda Bell to Matti Bell a I don't think Matti sounds right, either).

So, how about Fiona 'Fifi' Bell or Matilda 'Tilda' Bell?

Lunarlyte · 24/05/2012 13:56

Oh, how cute - I've just twigged that Tilda Bell sounds like Tinker Bell! Lovely!

Lunarlyte · 24/05/2012 13:57

I wish our surname was Bell

Hassled · 24/05/2012 13:57

I think they'd all be fine with Bell. Martha is my favourite, followed by Fiona.

Disneydreams · 24/05/2012 18:34

Edie bell is cute. Nothing like edible. It's eedi not eddi and bell not bull. How about a nice middle name to break it up such as Mae or Rose or grace. Edie Rose bell is just lovely.
