Calla?

I came across this name in a baby names book and like the sound of it. Think it comes from the Calla lily. Does it sound like a proper name, though, or just one I could have conjured up in my head?! Does anyone know any Callas?

No sure, think Cally would be better imho.

As a child my sister had a good friend named Calla. It sounded fairly outlandish at the time but now I like it, it fits in with Cora etc.

Never heard of it but I like it !

Erm, isn't that the name of a housebuilder (is that just in Scotland?)

Trestle · 21/05/2012 22:17

It's nice - I thought of the plant too.

My first cousin had a baby (now 3y) named Kalla (with 2 dots on the first a for pronunciation in Finnish), but it's pronounced Calla and she chose it because she loves flowers and calla lily's are her fave. The middle name is Lia (after a grandmother) and she liked that Kalla Lia sounds similar to Calla Lily. I think Calla is a lovely name.

I like Calla, also Cally. What about Della or Carla as alternatives with a similar sound?

DogEared · 25/05/2012 14:25

Cala (pronounced Calla) is a little-used but known Welsh word for penis. :o

squoosh · 25/05/2012 15:04

My first thought is fragelistic

I thought house builder too. But we are in Scotland, not sure if they are just a Scottish builder!

bordersh3ll · 27/05/2012 00:32

No it doesn't sound like a proper name at all. I thought of the Welsh word the first time I heard it.

It is the name of the princess in Disney's Gummi Bears, see here.

My friend's pony is called Calla. I find it a bit of an odd name even for a pony tbh. Sorry Smile

abbypumpkin · 27/05/2012 16:08

I've heard the name callie and think it's lovely. I can't see any problem with calla, I've heard lots of weird names that make you feel sorry for the kids. Calla is very uncommon but not weird. I think it's pretty
