Ben T?

We both really love the name Benjamin/Ben, but our surname begins with T. Is there a danger that it will be mercilessly tormented for being Ben T? Should we move on?

I realised this about my son a few months after he was born! He is Ben T Surname. I worried a bit but then thought if the middle initial is being used then the full name would be used too (Benjamin). I think in your case it could be an issue if there is more than one Ben in his class, he could be known as Ben T. Do kids use the word 'bent' anymore though? I think I would still go ahead and call him Ben if you really like the name.

Lunarlyte · 19/05/2012 13:07

Who is Ben T?

Lunarlyte · 19/05/2012 13:08

Ohhhhhh Bent, I get it.

No, you have to go with something else. Somen will notice and might tease. Sorry x

beccabubbless · 19/05/2012 13:16

oh yeah, just seen that now!
erm, sorry to say i would go with something else.
kids will find anything to tease other kids about, im going to try and at least make it a challenge!
shame though, what about ben as a middle name?

Thanks all for your honesty! Time for us to move on to other names :-)

I automatically thought of Ben Ten, not that it would spell 'bent'!!

GlaikitFizzog · 19/05/2012 14:25

I went to school with a Chris T. he wore it well tbh.

MirandaGoshawk · 19/05/2012 14:32

No, I think you're worrying about it unnecessarily. If you love it, don't let that stop you from using it.

SoupDragon · 19/05/2012 14:33

You are worrying unnecessarily. I know a Ben T and it has never occurred to me.

HeidiHole · 19/05/2012 14:33

Sorry looked at that for ages wondering who Ben T was. Never came up with bent. only when I read the reply here

Think it's fine!

Lunarlyte · 19/05/2012 14:36

I've just had a thought. I'll use the example that your 'T' surname is Timms. So, if your son is Benjamin Timms, it will read as 'B. Timms'.

No sign of Ben T at all.

Heck, it's such a jump to Ben T from B. Timms; some schmuck would really have to think about it! x

mungojerrie · 19/05/2012 14:39

I wouldn't - if there is more than one ben in his nursery/school he will be known as ben.t and it wouldn't take long for someone to notice....

kaumana · 19/05/2012 14:56

Several Bens play in the same rugby team and they are called by their surname. My mind went to Ben 10. Can't see where they would be referred to Ben A or Ben T even on paperwork. As they should refer to Benjamin T. IYSWIM

sonniboo · 19/05/2012 15:06

As Ben is quite popular there are likely more than one Ben in his class, so there is a good chance he'll be known as Ben T.

ItWasThePenguins · 19/05/2012 15:12

I think it's fine. Really don't think anyone would notice. We have surname beginning t too, and if it weren't my brothers name it would be on our list.

SocksOnFire · 19/05/2012 15:18

My ds is a Ben T and I have never ever thought of that, nor has anyone else. He's had no problems with it yet. (9 yrs)

kaumana · 19/05/2012 15:38

If there would be more than one in a class he would be known as Ben Tea not a hard T. If he was Ben D he may be asked to show off his contortionist skills in the playground Grin

WidowWadman · 19/05/2012 15:45

My husband is one, and seems to have survived his childhood unscathed.

Labootin · 19/05/2012 15:47

that honestly didn't occur to me and Ben is a lovely name

puch · 19/05/2012 16:00

my son is called Ben and he is 12 now and our surname starts wtih T and he has never been teased. I thought he may do not with Ben 10 but with BT! Ben is a lovely name. Go for it

kerala · 19/05/2012 20:59

If popularity bothers you I would avoid Ben. There are at least 2 in each class around here.

FrauGrau · 19/05/2012 21:19

Honestly! Don't overthink the nickname thing - the kid will prob end up being called Speccy or something random like Hopalong or Dildo.
