Just that really, do you like them, how would you pronounce them?

I wouldn't know if you meant Ilana (like Trump) or Elena/ Helena tbh. Not seen either of those spellings. How are you pronouncing them?

Like Elaine with an 'a' afterwards? I might be tempted to go with Elena. Eleanor is similar and not widely used?

In this day and age they are all going to get shortened to the dreaded Ellie anyway, I suspect. Grin

El-ah-na and El-ay-na, I prefer Elaina btw

Katsuma · 18/05/2012 05:01

I much prefer Alaina Grin

It needs to be alana or elena tbh. Your spellings are off but the names are nice.

PacketOfBiscuits · 18/05/2012 09:23

El-ah-na and El-ay-na

Softlysoftly · 18/05/2012 10:20

packet they are the pronunciations yey!

They are real names Elana = Oak tree in Hebrew and Elaina = bright light in Greek but do they sound made up?

No, they don't look made up but they do look like interesting spellings of Alana and Elena.

Elaine is a fairly common name among a certain generation (!) so I am sure you could use Elaina without much difficulty - particularly if you wanted the nickname Lainey. For what it's worth, it'll stop people pronouncing Elena as Eleanor and it looks pretty.

Elana doesn't look right to me; I think it needs to be Alana or Ilana.

Behindthename.com is usually a good bet for looking up names and neither Elana or Elaina are on there but Alana and Elena are. Nameberry.com lists Elaina as a variation of Elaine or Elena and Elana as a variation of Elaine, Eleanor, Elena or Ilana.

From the handful of comments you've got so far, no one has come across those spellings so I'd double check. If you're going to use the spellings Elana and Elaine, check them out in another reputable baby name book or ask someone who knows Hebrew/Greek to check that they're legitimate names/spellings (and not something pretty the author has cobbled together).

I posted a very similar thread a while back. I love these names but it's hard to get the right spelling and therefore the right pronounciation.

CousinCairngormMcWomble · 27/05/2012 19:20

What about Eleni or Alannah?

StellaAndFries · 27/05/2012 19:24

I have an Elana, we pronounce it El- ah-na. Mil wanted Esther, dp wanted a nod towards the Jewish side and it was the name of a princess in a book we both read so it fitted in nicely.

UniS · 27/05/2012 19:31

elana el-ah-na or maybe el-ann-a

elaina e-lane-ah

family member has the 2nd spelling, so pronounce it that way frequently.
