Just read an article in the paper about a little boy called Thys. I was quite surprised to see a name that I had never heard of and Googled it. It turns out it's a Dutch name and is pronounced 'Tice'- although I'm assuming there may be a slightly longer 'ayee' sound in the middle? Has anyone heard this before? What are your thoughts?

Yes it can be short for mathijs. I know 3 boys with that name (live in holland)

It's a lovely name

Ragwort · 17/05/2012 06:57

Honestly - Wink - my thoughts are 'Lice' and its a ridiculously 'try too hard name' - Grin.

It makes me think of the Danish TV show The Killing (in which there was a character called Theiss (pron. the same).

So in my head now I am saying Theiss! Troels! Nanna Birk Larssen!

It's quite nice but doesn't really work in this country.

Pasiphae · 17/05/2012 10:47

Wouldn't most people in the UK prononce it the same as 'This'?

Bellaholland · 18/05/2012 13:28

I live in holland and love this name! It is prounoced 'tice' and I can't see why it shouldn't work! You would have to tell some people how to prounounce it I guess but it's not like the UK only has children/adults in it with English and easy to prounounce names! If you like it go for it! It is very popular here I know several!

AWomanCalledHorse · 18/05/2012 13:31

I thought it was a unique way of spelling 'this', I don't think it would work in the UK (speaking as someone who has to spell first name & surname every time I talk to anyone).

nizlopi · 18/05/2012 13:37

Give the kid some vowels fgs

debka · 18/05/2012 13:44

squoosh · 18/05/2012 14:02

Theis! Pernille! Lund!

but best of all TROELS!!!!!

SilkStalkings · 18/05/2012 14:06

Isn't there a Greek/French girls' name Thais (with 2 dots on the i) which is pronounced the same way.

redrubyshoes · 18/05/2012 14:11

I agree it would be pronounced This in English.

Reminds me a little of the Addams Family with Cousin It and his son What because that is what the doctor shouted when he was born.

Lunarlyte · 18/05/2012 14:49

I think it's awesome. Imagine how lovely a signature signed by Thys would look. Imagine, too, allthe girls clambering to get a date with Thys - it sounds very cool.

lovechoc · 18/05/2012 15:18

The Killing. That's where I've heard it before! Nice name but I think the spelling of it may confuse people.

Lannie33 · 18/05/2012 15:22

GO FOR IT if you like the sound. Don't listen to people who are afraid of the spelling or pronunciation. I have an ethnic name that's also scandinavian and have to spell my name for people. But it's exotic and cool to have an usual name, especially if it's not just made up but an actual name from another culture.

Lannie33 · 18/05/2012 15:23

i meant unual name :)

Lannie33 · 18/05/2012 15:24

wow, am not retarded, really. UNUSUAL is what i actually meant :o

only4tonight · 18/05/2012 15:25

I knew a Theiss many moons ago. He was lovely (and Greek god looking) so the name just makes me smile. Though I would assume some dutch connection.

nizlopi · 18/05/2012 15:31

Lannie33, you may not be 'retarded' but you are pretty offensive, well done on that.

belgo · 18/05/2012 15:36

There are usually two dtos over the 'y' I think - isn't it supposed to be Thijs?

Sidge · 18/05/2012 16:13

I thought you'd planned to type Rhys but hit the T instead of the R.

Maybe because I'm not Dutch and don't watch 'The Killing' Grin
