Help with girl's name

I'm getting a bit desperate with choosing a girl's name. The birth is imminent and dh has said no to my original thoughts after some deliberation and really likes Martha. I'm not too sure, not bad but I feel it's not that pretty a name. I favour Lois or Leisa or possibly Elisa but dh says this won't sound right with our surname which also starts with L and has an s in it.

What do you think? Just canvassing opinions really. Can't ask people in rl as it will probably cause more problems.

I don't like Martha at all. I am not keen on Lois or Leisa but I do like Elisa.

AceOfBase · 12/05/2012 11:57

Marisa?

thisisyesterday · 12/05/2012 12:19

i really love Martha

Elisa is nice too though, but hard to say without knowing what your surname actually is.

Wildwaterfalls · 12/05/2012 14:07

I think Martha is pretty. How about Elise instead of Elisa? Or if your DH is keen in Ma- names, something like Marielle or Marianne?

Basically suggesting my own short list here Blush..

Alice would be nice to, a bit like Elisa/e but without an s

Stellan · 12/05/2012 14:49

I really like Martha - I think it's wonderful.

I've never heard of Leisa - is it pronounce like Lisa? I don't like Elisa (which I guess pronounced like Lisa with an E but maybe like Alyssa). All very dated.

Lois is OK but I'm not sure whether you intend for it to be pronounced low-is or to rhyme with the word 'voice'. Might be a bit Lois Lane-y with your surname though.

I'm not sure whether you want any suggestions but maybe you'd like:
Marina
Matilda
Marissa
Elisabeth or Elizabeth
Melissa
Melanie
Elodie
Anna
Selena
Melody
Alicia
Mirabella
Larissa
Louisa
Michaela
Merryn
Meredith
Mary
Margaret
Marianne
Miriam
Eliana

I think Esther would be a nice choice for you. Strong Biblical name like Martha, begins with an E some of the names you like.

cakeismysaviour · 12/05/2012 14:51

I really like Elise. Elspeth is our first choice for a girl.

HandMadeTail · 12/05/2012 14:52

I like all your choices, as well as Martha.

One of my DDs has a name that starts with the same letter as her surname, and she really likes her double initial. She makes a big thing of it, and signs all her art work with her initials.

HandMadeTail · 12/05/2012 14:53

If your surname is Lewis, don't go for Lois, though. Wink

olivia41 · 12/05/2012 14:59

Love the name "Lois", how about "Lara"? Smile

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/05/2012 17:07

Martha is lovely. Not overfond of Lois tbh and Leisa is not nice, sorry. Elisa or Leisa and a surname beginning with L could be a bit much.

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 12/05/2012 17:09

Martha is quite sweet.
Lois is awful (we have one in the family, when she was born I thought 'awful, but it'll grow on me', she's 6 now and it's still awful imo)
Leisa - I don't know how that would be pronounced, like Lisa?
Elisa - is lovely and very pretty

How about;

Zara
Matilda
Lara
Maddie
Aliah
Anya
Marnie

shandybass · 12/05/2012 17:15

Mm thanks for the responses.
Looks like dh has a point with the surname. It would be Lois as in voice, and ive also thought Elisa will either be Lisa or Elise neither of which I like or sounds right double barrelled.

Elspeth was one of my original favourites but dh won't hear of it as he knew a dodgy Elspeth in his youth!

Guess Martha is ok.
I'm not fussed with anything else. Don't want it to be too English, were in Wales.

Do you not fancy any welsh names OP?

What about Meredith or merryn? Not that they are welsh Grin

PercyFilth · 12/05/2012 17:37

Lois as in voice? I've never heard anyone pronounce it that way, it's Lo-is.

McKayz · 12/05/2012 17:39

I agree with Percy, no one would pronounce Lois as in voice.

PercyFilth · 12/05/2012 17:43

If you like that sound, there's Joyce which doesn't have the L problem.

TwllBach · 12/05/2012 17:54

I've heard it pronounced like voice a couple of times in nurseries in north Wales.

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 12/05/2012 19:12

Lois like voice? That's even worse than Low-is. Sounds like lice with a brummie accent

shandybass · 12/05/2012 19:12

Ok you're right it would be pronounced Lois as in voice but the other way makes it a total no no.
Leisa is pronounced Lay-sha which is what I meant that it would end up as Elise or Lisa.
I think I mayghent to start again.
Yes twllbach I want it to be Welshish but not too
difficult for all to pronounce.

Mair
Nia
Elen
Elwyn
Gwen
Gwenda
Nerys
Rhian
Mali
Bethan
Mari
Celyn
Sian
Ffion
Seren

PestoPenguin · 12/05/2012 20:27

Eleri is also pretty

slacklucy · 12/05/2012 20:30

I love Martha, i know two little Martha's & are both gorgeous little girls with big personalities.
How about Maisy or

shandybass · 14/05/2012 09:57

By the way I just wanted to point out although I've now discounted it that Lois would be pronounced 'Loice' in Wales especially if that's how you introduce it. The fact that there is another pronunciation does cause confusion but does not rule out the other!

Sorry but I just felt this needed to be said as it's been irking me all weekend.
