Orlando?

Me again!
Expecting DS in 7 weeks. DH and I still can't agree a name. Current front runners are Nicolas and Alexander which tick the boxes but don't thrill or excite us.
DH has suddenly decided he really likes Orlando.
DD's name is Eva.
I kind of feel if we'd called her Xanthe, or Anais, or Venus Electra (like we considered Wink) we could get away with Orlando.
I like it but I'm not sure I could brazen it out (not very brave with name choices). What do you think?

It's a bit, idk, theatrical for me. I would rather choose it near-anagram, Roland.

squoosh · 10/05/2012 15:48

It's quite . . um. . . . . dramatic. Good name but I'd imagine it would need a certain type of owner to carry it off with aplomb. It's a name he might love or find to be a bit of a millstone.

gaunyerseljeannie · 10/05/2012 15:50

the Marmalade Cat Grin or is that showing my age

Stellan · 10/05/2012 15:54

I rather like it but it is a grand name for anyone to pull off - boy or man! Could always tell people he was conceived at Disney World Orlando to bring it down a few notches in the grandness stakes...

tammytoby · 10/05/2012 15:57

I love Orlando - cool, masculine and interesting! Much, much nicer than Alex or Nick imo.

redrubyshoes · 10/05/2012 16:02

I like it. A grand name.

booomchikkawowow · 10/05/2012 16:20

Makes me think bloom.

Psammead · 10/05/2012 16:22

I think it's great.

ImBetterThanYou · 10/05/2012 16:23

I really like it :) and I think it still works well with Ava.

thing1andthing2 · 10/05/2012 16:27

Thanks for all the feedback. I guess there's a difference between liking a name in the abstract and liking it enough to inflict it on give it to your child.
For those of you who like it, do you like it enough to call your own DS Orlando? And if your friend named their son that would you think "hey that's a nice name" or would you think "wtf? what kind of name is that?"

It's awful.

thing1andthing2 · 10/05/2012 16:32

with a cherry Grin nothing like saying it straight!

I would put it on my list, yes. Whether or not I feel it is the best name ever for all our criteria and whetger DH would agree, no idea. But I would put it on a draft list.

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 10/05/2012 16:39

I mulled this one over for ds, I absolutely love it but decided against it for 1) Orlando Bloom and 2) Disneyworld!

Save it for a cat one day..?

WithACherryOnTop · 10/05/2012 16:41

Well you did ask for opinions.

Montsti · 10/05/2012 16:53

I love it! I met a couple of guys called this when I lived in Italy...I think it works well with Eva too.

It was on my list for DC2 (it is a girl though and hadn't thought of it for DS) but I am super-boring (see top 20 names...) so probably would have chickened out...

Go for it if you love it!

MoonHare · 10/05/2012 17:06

I do like it but to answer your question, not enough to name my own DS. Though we are considering Reuben for DC3 if a boy, similar but not so flouncey maybe??

Mmmnotsure · 10/05/2012 17:23

Well we did. Dh loved it and at first I wasn't sure ds or I would cope. But it has worked brilliantly, and honestly there isn't another name I would ever choose instead. Ds lives up to his name, actually. Orlando Bloom/Lord of the Rings helped to make it more normal, though we got the questions about did we have a good holiday in Florida (never been btw).

And I asked Ds on the way home from school just now, and he says he likes having an 'original' name, and definitely wouldn't want to change it (he's a teenager, so I guess it must have been okay).

tammytoby · 10/05/2012 17:54

Yes, I would give it to my son. But then we seem to like unusual names as our ds's name was only used 11 times last year Smile.

What is NOT to like about Orlando?

poppydaisy · 10/05/2012 17:59

Orlando is great - love it! Agree that Nick and Alex are dull in comparison.

mopsyflopsy · 10/05/2012 18:01

I like it. Different but not unusual.

jaffacakehips · 10/05/2012 18:11

Love the name, suggested it to DH this morning. Would use it however it doesn't go with our surname.

Belchica · 10/05/2012 18:34

Love it. Go for it! It's my OH's name and I would love to steal it for our baby but we'll give him/her their own name. He gets Ollie as a nn.

AhsokaTano · 10/05/2012 21:01

I like it, wouldn't use it myself as have epic surname and tend to go for short first names.

I think it would probably be one of those that people double take at on first hearing it but get used to pretty quickly.

jadziadax · 10/05/2012 21:27

I know an Orlando, nn Lando. Am a star wars fan, so I think it's pretty cool.
