Nope sorry, I do like polly though.

ellesabe · 03/05/2012 20:22

Sounds like a posh work for hay fever. Sorry!

Love Polly though...

BumbleBee2011 · 03/05/2012 20:22

Pretty name - makes me think of The Godfather though...

PuppyMonkey · 03/05/2012 20:23

I won't pan it, but I don't like it, sorry.

mirry2 · 03/05/2012 20:23

Sounds like Covonia

CelticPromise · 03/05/2012 20:24

I know a baby Apollonia. I really like it, it suits the family.

missmiss · 03/05/2012 20:24

I like it!

WitchOfEndor · 03/05/2012 20:25

Makes me think statuesque, large boned, aquiline nose. If these features run in your family then it might suit her.

SecretNutellaFix · 03/05/2012 20:25

It's very striking.

I think it all depends on what your family is like

bibbitybobbitybunny · 03/05/2012 20:26

Fine but only if you are Greek or dp is Greek.

Otherwise - no.

Chunkamatic · 03/05/2012 20:27

Ive never heard of it - what are its origins?

For some reason it made me think of a dressage horse when I first read it, but I think it could be a grower!

If you love it, go for it. Polly is a lovley nn.

TheGrandOldDuke · 03/05/2012 20:28

I adore Polly, but none of the names it usually is shortened from. I feel the need to have a longer name, should she ever want to have a more formal name later on. My degree is in Classics so have always wanted a Classical nod when naming my kids....but just not sure now it comes down to it that I have the guts. It doesn't help that our surname is extremely long and whilst goes very nicely, would get her teased for being a snooty name.
Sigh.

Go for it if you love it.
I like it.
Unusual names are great.

Hassled · 03/05/2012 20:31

I actually love it. I've quite surprised myself (I'm a stuffy old codger when it comes to names) :o.

The only connotation it has for me is that she was the beautiful girl Michael Corleone loved in Sicily in Godfather Part One. She came to a sticky end (blown up in a car). But it doesn't stop it being a lovely name.

It also comes from the verb apollumi which means to destroy which puts me off a bit.... But can't you always find something negative about a name if you look hard enough?
I just don't want to regret it if I do or don't dare!!

ifeelloved · 03/05/2012 20:36

If you like it, go for it. I still regret not going for my face name for dd2

Badgerina · 03/05/2012 20:38

Polly is so sweet! Don't like Apollonia at al though (and I'm the one who likes Ptolemy!)

laptopcomputer · 03/05/2012 20:39

she was in Purple rain as well ;-)

Hassled · 03/05/2012 20:44

I think you should do it. You'll regret it if you don't.

Voidka · 03/05/2012 20:44

Sounds like a fancy Greek restaurant.

LineRunner · 03/05/2012 20:45

It's cool.

SweetPea3 · 03/05/2012 20:51

My close friend is also madly in love with this name but it is being vetoed by her DH. It is really growing on me too. I hadn't thought about nicknames, but Polly is lovely.

Do you have an Italian surname or heritage?

TheGrandOldDuke · 03/05/2012 20:55

I'll also have to combine it with 2 middle names, so it's going to be a proper mouthful if I do.
It's a Greek name, and no, no family history, but an academic one.

SweetPea3 · 03/05/2012 20:57

Ah, I had assumed it was Italian!
