Argh! We keep making up rude names for DC2 - help!

DH and I are blessed with a surname that is something along the lines of 'Fantasy' Hmm Every time we come across a name combination we like it ends up sounding like a stripper. The latest example is Seth Ephraim -> Seth E. Fantasy -> argh!

We end up collapsing in giggles but we really need to think of a proper name for the poor child. Both of us like Seth as a name for a DS but we realise we might need to let it go as lots of middle initials seem to be ruled out for the above reason: A, B, C, D, E, G, P, T, V, X.

Any ideas for a middle name to go with Seth that won't sound shocking out loud? Or do we have to think of something else?

Call me dim but I don't see what the problem is .

nizlopi · 02/05/2012 21:31

I don't really get it either...

AKMD · 02/05/2012 22:07

I'm a bit embarrassed to spell it out but if you say Seth E Fantasy out loud it sounds an awful lot like sexy fantasy. Or maybe that's just our accents :) Either way, it would take the playground about 5 seconds to figure it out. DC are already in for a lifetime of bad jokes about their surname (DH knows the lot); we don't want to make it worse.

Surely Seth Fantasy would also be a problem for similar reasons?

badtime · 02/05/2012 22:15

If you're worried about your child's name sounding like 'sexy fantasy', why are you not concerned about 'sex fantasy' when the name is said without the middle initial? That would happen much more often.

Personally, I can't really see the problem, but if you are concerned about how it would sound, I don't see how any middle name could fix it.

thegreylady · 02/05/2012 22:15

Michael
Zachary
Henry
or...why bother about a middle name if the Seth witll sound like sex then I'm not sure Seth Fantasy is any better or worse than Seth E Fantasy tbh

AKMD · 02/05/2012 22:18

The surname isn't quite a bad as Fantasy so Seth as a first name wouldn't be a problem really. It's when you put the lot together that it isn't great.

A middle name is a must. DS1 has a middle name and we wouldn't want a DS2 not to have one.

Of course we could have a DD, which would solve the issue :)

We might just have to give up on Seth.

If you like Old Testament names then how about Jacob, Daniel, Caleb, David, Aaron, Jonah, Benjamin?

AKMD · 02/05/2012 22:42

Thanks BBQ. I am terrible at word associations, which is why we are a bit stuck on names. For me, reading the list above goes like this:

Jacob ('s crackers), Daniel (spaniel), Caleb (celeb), David (Uriah), Aaron (DS1's middle name), Jonah (whale), Benjamin (Button).

I like Joel. DH isn't keen. DH likes Daniel. I think spaniel.

At this rate I'm going to be back on here 2 weeks post-partum desperate for a name, any name! DS1 was easy.

:) Well some word-associations are negative and some are positive or neither. If you can find an association (which most people won't make) with every name, then could you be content with one where at least it's not a negative one? E.g. there's nothing really wrong with spaniels and buttons, is there?

AKMD · 02/05/2012 22:46

True, I just hate the sing-song voice in my head that goes off every time I hear lots of names. DS1 has a name a lot of people have never heard of (another obscure OT name) because there are no associations. Gah.

I also think any associations would fade with time... if you have a little Benjamin you'll be too busy to be thinking about buttons all the time!

BBQJuly · 02/05/2012 22:47

You'd become "immune" to the association I think?

GoPoldark · 02/05/2012 22:51

Just call him Spaniel.

Spaniel Fantasy

MummysLittleSunbeams · 03/05/2012 07:36

Lol at gopoldark! Grin

Now I'm really curious as to what your REAL surname is!

SoupDragon · 03/05/2012 07:39

No one ever uses first name plus middle initial. Sticking another name in would stop that though.

billgrangersrisotto · 03/05/2012 07:47

I think you're over thinking it to be honest. Seth doesn't sound like sex. Nobody would use first name and middle initial only. If you're bothered about school, just dont register the middle name when DS2 goes there. You don't have to use a middle name (or even have one).

abbypumpkin · 03/05/2012 12:27

I don't get sex from Seth even after you've spelled it out, I don't think it's anywhere near. As for the other names, every name you can think of with have some kind of association whether good or bad and bare in mind that even if you pick a name with no connotations that bother you, who's to say that after lo is born there is going to be some new celeb, character, serial killer etc etc who comes into the forum with that name. I think you really just need to accept that kids may have a bit of a laugh about your surname and just choose a name that you love.

I first thought of Max, Justin, Frank and Inigo, which are probably on your comedy list, and aren't much help!

Denzil
Lewis
Marcus
Matthew
James
Quentin
Zadok

AKMD · 03/05/2012 17:28

Hmm, Nebuchednezzar would be an interesting one...

Funnily enough DS's name was slightly spoilt after he was born as some idiot went on a shooting spree :(

Thanks for the suggestions. DH and I agree that it's back to the drawing board.

At least with a name like Nebuchednezzar you'd get your money's worth out of the school name tag embroiderersGrin
Also, he could overcome the tricky spelling by looking out for the really long name and pointing to itWink
