Hi, DC 1 is due in around 4 weeks and we're struggling to find a boy's name we both like. I have a big long list of lovely girl's names but boys are sooo much harder! DP thinks most of mine are too posh/pretentious or Scottish ( we are not posh or scottish!! ) but hasn't come up with any of his own! Surname will be one syllable beginning with L and I think we want a middle name too ( if we can agree on two names... ). Have so far come up with....
Douglas
Laurence (love this, love Laurie as nn but too alliterative?)
Declan
Elliot
Fergus
Edward
Maxwell
Patrick
William
Riordan
Kenver
Piran
Or any other suggestions? As don't really love any of these as much as love my girl's short list! Thanks!

Kenver

Douglas - I quite like this, though DS' favourite book today is Hugless Douglas so I personally probably wouldn't go for it! NN probably Dougie in our house
Laurence - Laurie is a lovely NN
Declan - like
Elliot - not sure
Fergus - like
Edward - love (the name of my lovely uncle)
Maxwell - no
Patrick - love
William - love (the name of another lovely uncle)
Riordan - not so much
Kenver - no
Piran - no

Yes,think the last three were a bit desperate... :)

Douglas - OK
Laurence - like a lot, whether it goes with your surname will depend on cadence, and swerve if it's Lee (too many comparisons with the author?)
Declan - like
Elliot - OK
Fergus - love
Edward - love
Maxwell - like
Patrick - love
William - like
Riordan - no
Kenver - quite like this
Piran - no

DS is an Edward so that would be my favourite! This DC is also looking likely to be a Douglas if a DS, Dougie is adorable. I also love Patrick, Fergus, Maxwell, Lawrence and William.

Scruffybear · 01/05/2012 22:31

Love Douglas, Declan is ok, Elliot I like, fergus, Edward, maxwell and Patrick I like. Whilst I also like William, every 4 th boy born this year and last near us is a William or an Oliver so I think you have nice alternatives. Randomly, some other names that came to mind;
Ethan
Gregory
Dylan
Aidan
Joseph.

Good luck with choosing!

Thanks, good to know that the ones I like best don't get a 'oh noooo' reaction! Also like Ethan and Aidan, will add them to the list! And I've left four baby name books in a prominent position so who knows, DP may even help me out.....

I like Elliot, William, Edward, Maxwell.

BBQJuly · 01/05/2012 22:48

Ethan and Aidan both nice too.

Laurence is a girls name in France, the female version of Laurent. A bit like Florence vs Florent.

I particularly like Fergus, Declan and Douglas - lovely, classic but not overused names.

forcedinsomnia · 02/05/2012 17:16

My nephew is Douglas (nn douggie) and I love it!
How about Rufus, Joshua, Walter, Tristan, Mitchell, Riley, Sebastian, Stanley, Jacob or Mason?

Any good?

survivingspring · 02/05/2012 20:42

Laurence or Edward from your list. Laurie Lee worked for the author/poet so I'm sure would be absolutely fine for your surname!! Laurence is not a girls name in the UK Confused

Cydonia · 02/05/2012 20:46

Thanks Forcedinsomnia, I like Rufus, Tristan and Jacob. Like Stanley but wouldn't go with surname, also like Sebastian but a friend has already nicked it!

Thanks also survivingspring! Laurence is a favourite but prefer that spelling to Lawrence. People keep telling me I'm going to have a boy as bump is all at the front ( though surely an old wives tale?! ) so need to work on the boy list.

Yeah Sebastian was my no 1 but a friend got there first. I went with one of the others on my list instead....and it suits my ds down to the ground. Also maybe Walter, jasper, Hugo? It's really hard isn't it? My best friend is pregnant with a boy at the mo and she's struggling. Sure you'll pick a cracking name.....my ds was named out of the blue as I lay in the operating table? Ha. Middle name came from nowhere....but we both loved it then...and still do now. Good luck. Grin

forcedinsomnia · 02/05/2012 21:13

Walter twice....whoops.Blush

Cydonia · 02/05/2012 21:23

I suppose it might be easier if baby does turn out to be a boy as girl's list is a mile long, will never choose just two names from it! People keep asking if we've picked names yet but I'm too scared to say any I like in case I get a bad reaction!

Found it easier to refuse to get drawn into name conversations (except with DH of course!) until baby was born and we'd decided!
