So hands up - who likes their own given name?

...If not, is there more of an emphasis on chosing the right one for DC so that they dont have to go through the same dislike?

If not, why not?

I'll start - I'm a Kirsty. Yes I like my name. Was not popular when I was growing up (one other in a school of 300) No bad nicknames or teasing and suits me well as an adult. Plus there are some great Kirsty/ Kirstie's around. My parents did a good job I think :)

What do you like / dislike about your own name?

I like my name- I'm a Philippa, I think it's classic but not too common. My sister was less fortunate and has always hated her name. She thought very carefully about her DDs' names.

ornellaia · 01/05/2012 18:09

I like my name - Emma. I think it's nice, feminine, classic. I hated it growing up, I wanted a name that could be shortened to a boy's name - Sam(antha) or George(ina). But I stopped wanting to be a boy a long time ago so now I like it.

DD has a very girly, slightly old-fashioned name, DS has a classic boys name - I still love their names and have no regrets about not choosing something more unusual.

DaenerysTargaryen · 01/05/2012 18:12

I don't like my name, its superbly boring. Hannah.

The Dd I named has an unusual (but not made up) name. Dp named the other so I can't comment, it's pretty enough but not what I'd have chosen. (It's a bit common)

DaenerysTargaryen · 01/05/2012 18:13

Common as in used a lot! I'm not snotty Grin

Pandygirl · 01/05/2012 18:51

Like my first and middle names, all traditional regal British names, nothing to be ashamed of here Grin

greenandcabbagelooking · 01/05/2012 18:58

I don't mind my given name, although I never really use it, I go by two different nicknames and have done since I was 11. Only my parents and my Gran call me by it. Only small issue is sometimes people pick the wrong shortening.

I don't like my combination of names, it's too long. 9 letters, 7, then 9. It doesn't fit on forms!

Happydogsaddog · 01/05/2012 19:00

Yes I like my name, its unusual! I was surprised as an adult to find the only other women I've met with my name are black, therefore me having my name causes much amusement to my culturally diverse corner of North London, I often get a second take when I introduce myself Grin as a result I have been nicknamed white happydog (bit like tall John and small John) Grin

exoticfruits · 01/05/2012 19:03

I like mine, although I use the short form. It never gets to top 10 but there are always a few in any generation. It doesn't date me, it doesn't embarrass me and I don't have to explain odd parents! I am just a bit miffed that I haven't got a second name.
(by the way, I think Hannah us lovely)

tara0202 · 01/05/2012 19:03

I quite like my name, its Tara. I didn't like it in primary school because there were no others! I wanted to be an Alison or a Louise - something like everyone else!

As I grew older, I liked it being uncommon. I have only ever met one other Tara.

I gave my DD an uncommon but not too out there name too as I have always liked my type of name.

ellesabe · 01/05/2012 19:14

I quite like my name but have spent my whole life surrounded by others and so wish I was called something less popular.

Takver · 01/05/2012 19:20

Yes, I like my name. I'm used to there being lots of us (6 out of 15 girls in my class at primary had variants on the name) and it doesn't bother me at all.

I like the fact that my name doesn't 'place' me at all IYKWIM (in England - combined with my surname it's a definitely Catholic name in N Ireland). And everyone can spell it! (Unlike my surname . . .)

pictish · 01/05/2012 19:20

Me!
I'm Iona.

Stellan · 01/05/2012 19:28

I like my name too - Charlotte. Always known a couple of others but was the only one in my year in primary school and not too many at secondary school. In my adult life I've met a few but they've tended to be Charlies or Lotties whereas I'm just Charlotte. It's common enough that everyone knows how to say it; it's feminine without being girly; and I've been lucky not to know too many of them!

FrauGrau · 01/05/2012 19:38

I have always LOVED my name - Fiona! there were lots around when I was at school (3 in my class) but so what? shows other people like it too! Only thing I don't like about it is that when I lived down south for a while, people thought it was "posh" hahaha!!! as if!!!
BTW so far as I know my DC BOTH like their (traditional, Scottish, names) result: go trad!!

PercyFilth · 01/05/2012 19:54

Hate my name as there is nowhere to go with it. It is a one-syllable nn of a classic name that has many other options. Something like Liz instead of Elizabeth. And no middle names either.

So I get very irritated by people who say "I'm not giving my child a name that I'm not going to call him/her, it's silly". They are selfish.

And it's not so easy to change a name, because by the time you are old enough for people to take you seriously, you are too associated with the name. It can be done, of course, but why not give your child the gift of a versatile name to start with.

Butwhatdoyoudoallday · 01/05/2012 19:58

I like my name, it's superbly boring though (allegedly) Wink

I'm a Hannah, and whilst it has been popular over recent years I've only met a few the same age as me. It has a lovely meaning and as its a Biblical name it can't be considered new or made up. I also due to being a total nerd loved that its a palindrome when I was small. Mostly because it meant I knew what palindrome meant whilst my peers didn't Grin

TodaysAGoodDay · 01/05/2012 20:00

I love mine. I chose it myself because I couldn't stand the one I was given. Deed Poll and all that Grin

I love my name. I was the only one with it at primary school and one of 2 at secondary school.

Having my name has influenced me into not shortening my children's names, or even giving them names that can altered - I hated mine being shortened - but other than that I was't actually overly bothered about what they were called Blush.

foxeeroxee · 01/05/2012 20:03

I like my name,Roxanne.I also like my 2 middle names though if i put them on here i would definitly out myself as they are quite unusually spelt.
Though at school i didnt like it that much when friends parents thought they were been hilarious and sung the police song to me as if id never heard it before. twats
Grin

cookielove · 01/05/2012 20:03

I love my name - Sarah

Its the name my dad i always wanted for a girl, i have a really lovely middle name to!!

I knew lots of Sarah's growing up, but not nearly so much now, never worked with a Sarah and i now know only one other adult friend with the same name.

JustFab · 01/05/2012 20:04

I hate my middle name though. I forgot I had one until I read upthread about someone's second name!

agora1 · 01/05/2012 20:06

No, can't stand my name. It's a hyphenated 70s name my parents put little thought into. My gran thought, Fiona, which should have been my name was hard to pronounce Hmm so they chose my name in a hurry.

I put a lot thought into my children's names. One of the things i did like about my name was there were only 3 of us in a school of 600, so I didn't want top 20 names for my children. Still concerned they won't like their names when older, although I do.

PercyFilth · 01/05/2012 20:07

In fairness to those of us of a certain age, it's nigh on impossible not to break out into the song whenever we encounter the name Roxanne :) (which I like, both name and song!)

technoduck · 01/05/2012 20:10

I like my name- Samantha
It is a double barrel name but might out myself if I said the second half, and have a very rare and unusual second name, which I also love Grin
