So hands up - who likes their own given name?

...If not, is there more of an emphasis on chosing the right one for DC so that they dont have to go through the same dislike?

If not, why not?

I'll start - I'm a Kirsty. Yes I like my name. Was not popular when I was growing up (one other in a school of 300) No bad nicknames or teasing and suits me well as an adult. Plus there are some great Kirsty/ Kirstie's around. My parents did a good job I think :)

What do you like / dislike about your own name?

I like mine (Charlotte) and always have done, apart from a brief period aged 8 when I decided life would be better if I was called Katherine.

Don't like mine but hate it less than I did as a child. I guess I'm just resigned to it.

I love mine (Sinéad) ,I get really irrationally offended when there's someone else with it! Its pretty common in Ireland, but not over here, only ever known one and she was in Ireland.

It has a decent amount of nn options too - splits into far more names than it looks like with a bit of thought, and I like that different people call me different names.

Good thing is the nns are quite personal iyswim - no one would ever just start calling me them the way they might start calling a Jennifer Jenny or Jen without asking, but they are there for use should I want them.

I think its affected my naming choices - I'm big on unusual names, my DCs will definitely have unusual names with a million nn options!

I hate mine - it's Anne. I'm a lot younger than you would probably imagine for the name. I have no idea what was going through my dad's mind when he chose it! And I hate hate hate the fact that you can't even do anything to change it either, and I have no middle names I could use instead...

Hence DD now has a 5 syllable name that can be shortened in a huge range of ways, and two middle names. I want her to have some choice!

I have a hyphonated name Rebecca-jayne - must admit to never being keen on it! (and always being brought up grammatically incorrect to spell jayne with a capital J wjen infact as it's hyphonated it should be lowercase - rolls eyes).

Also too many nicknames can be given - and i personally have to love any nn's for any name i would give my offspring!

All my life i was Becca to family, Beccy to friends (spelt that way as there were 5 in my year and we all had to differentiate and i preferred a spelling that mirrored the full version) and then i had the silly nn's such as BJ , (Blow job queen etc) then there's the variation of nn spellings to - which irritate such as Becky, Beki, Bekki, Becki, and so on!

HOWEVER after finally tracking down my real father i now know that i am named after a relative and that feels much more fitting....and compared to my sisters names - my name is much more classic and timeless...
