So hands up - who likes their own given name?

...If not, is there more of an emphasis on chosing the right one for DC so that they dont have to go through the same dislike?

If not, why not?

I'll start - I'm a Kirsty. Yes I like my name. Was not popular when I was growing up (one other in a school of 300) No bad nicknames or teasing and suits me well as an adult. Plus there are some great Kirsty/ Kirstie's around. My parents did a good job I think :)

What do you like / dislike about your own name?

I love my name. Think Aniston, Lopez etcetera...

When I was a kid I was JJ
When I was a teen I was Jenny
Now I am Jen

Only ever Jennifer when I'm getting told off :)

ACoiledThing · 02/05/2012 16:44

Really like mine - Sarah.

LadyofWinterfell · 02/05/2012 17:27

I'm a Julia, hated it and wanted something more exotic for a while. Then I found out DDad wanted to call me Aggrippa - think i got off quite lightly!
In the 90s the boy i had a crush on kept singing Julia Says (wet wet wet) to me too. Oh the joy! Hmm

exoticfruits · 02/05/2012 17:44

Sarah is my top favourite -if I had a girl I would have used it.

dontpetthesweatythings · 03/05/2012 13:02

I've never met another one of me - Alix.

Not short for anything, just that. I don't mind it actually. It's not too girly but sweet enough. Just like me! ;)

The only problem is the gender confusion it causes. I have people call up our switchboard at work and ask if I am a Mr or Mrs ! I have lots of post also addressed to Mr Alix !

duchesse · 03/05/2012 13:41

Alix is such a lovely medieval name.

insanityscratching · 03/05/2012 13:58

Hate my name, it features on every list of awful names ever posted on here.

Not going to post it but think lady in Italian.

It's so bad dd asked me if my parents hadn't liked me when I was born because the gave me an awful name Grin

Kikithecat · 03/05/2012 13:59

Kveta is your name Stork? Echo? .... ohhhh I've got it now!

duchesse · 03/05/2012 14:17

UtterlyButterly. Got to be that.

JustFab · 03/05/2012 14:22

Flora!!

bean612 · 03/05/2012 14:28

I hated my name growing up as it was really unusual and I used to get teased about it. As an adult I love it - but now it's frickin super-popular and there are loads of little running around. Curses! [shakes fist]

Ineedacleaneriamalazyslattern · 03/05/2012 14:28

I'm a Pamela I actually like it now.
I hated it as a child and asked my mum why she couldn't have picked something cool like Danielle Grin
I have a friend where I'm from in the highlands and always say to him say my name because I like how it sounds.
In Aberdeen I get called Pumla which I'm not so keen on.
There is only one person calls me Pam which I don't like but he varies it in lots of odd ways. Last was Pambola Confused

nizlopi · 03/05/2012 15:07

I like my name, its Joy, which is a great name to have. I've always had compliments on it.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 03/05/2012 15:13

I don't particularly like my name. If anything just because it has dated, especially the middle name combination together.

It makes it easy to estimate my age give or take a few years and there were several others in my year growing up (I'm a contemporary of hundreds of Sarah's too!).

Another Sarah. I didn't particularly like it as a kid but I do now. I'm 50 and because it's still in use but not massively, I think makes it hard to pin an age to. I also think it's a name that suits all ages. And it works in quite a few faith groups too - Zara/Sara is quite a popular Muslim name as well as a Jewish/Christian one. My middle name is Jessica which for some reason I loathed as a kid. Now I like it, but people assume my parents were channelling Sarah Jessica Parker, which wouldn't be possible as she's at least 10 years younger than me.

MrsLetch · 03/05/2012 20:11

I dislike both my names. I loathe my first name, and am never called it. Its just so 70s and naff. So I am known as a nickname which I have chosen instead. My mother doesn't particularly like my nickname, but tough - my name, not hers!

It did affect me in the sense that when I was naming my children, I was very aware that I was giving them a name rather than me choosing a name. So I very much put the emphasis on thinking of a name my children would like, rather than just going for the name I like. I also ensure that my children had lots of options should they decide that they didn't like their names. DD1 has 5 alternatives to her name, and DD2 has 6. Both use nicknames that they have chosen (one partially uses her nickname, but DD2 is now only called by her nickname). I also made sure I didn't choose any 'faddy' names; I avoided anything top 50 and I also avoided anything with a sharp rise to it. I don't think my children's names will date in the same way mine has (and if they do, they at least have the option of one of their many potential nicknames!)

pigletpower · 03/05/2012 22:46

I'm a 70's Kerry.Love it.'Dark haired warrior' oohhh yeah!!!

sashh · 04/05/2012 04:24

Not telling you mine, it was an OK name but spelled in a chavy way, so although there were 5 of us in the same class the other 4 had the 'correct' not made up spelling.

My middle name was very common as a first name growing up, but everyone I encountered with that name was a bitch (which is why I'm not saying what it was - don't want to insult anyone)

I shortened it to the first 4 letters and when I was changing my name officially I couldn't think of a better name, it just felt 'me' so I now have a 4 letter first name and no middle name.

CheerfulYank · 04/05/2012 06:14

I'm Megan and I like it. I always called myself Meg, but I changed my surname when I married and started introducing myself as Megan again because the new surname is very short and abrupt sounding.

My middle name is Christine...after the Stephen King book. About the murderous car. Hmm

first1 · 04/05/2012 21:31

Mines ok I suppose, Lucy Kate but I find my first name too "little girl-ish" now. There are three Lucy's in my dd's nursery class, all under 2!

Mama1980 · 04/05/2012 21:34

I love my first name but my middle name is grace and while I think it's pretty it's a bit of a family joke how inappropriate it is as one thing I am not is graceful! I spend half of my life tripping over my own feet much to dc s amusement.

ihateshopping · 05/05/2012 10:35

my name is Cassy. pronounced "Cass-e"

I like my name, I never used to like it as I always thought of it as a little girls name, but I love it now.

When asked my name people always think I am saying cathy, and it gets spelt wrong all the time. My aunt spells it Cassie on the envelope and Cassey in the card! - think she is hopeing to get it right one way or another!

i have never met another "Cass-e" spelt Cassy

CocoKev · 05/05/2012 11:30

I'm Corrie- never met another one and really like it because it's unusual. Also I've not once seen it suggested or slated on the MN baby name board!
Some gender confusion- Mum very wisely gave me quite a feminine- sounding middle name which is something I'd also do if choosing something gender neutral.
I'm often asked what it's short for -nothing- but that's not annoying really, people are just interested as they're not familiar with it.

Babyno3tobe · 05/05/2012 13:53

I don't mind my name so much now Samantha but hated it as a child always preferred my middle name as it was different Jay and it's rubbed off as an adult as iv picked ds1 name who is the only person who I know has this name iv googled and their is only 1 other person on google who has this name but spelt different and my ds2 has a slightly more known name but still rare and spelt different to others so my love for odd names has left its imprint and this next one hoping for a dd has an equally rare and unique name waiting
