Sholto? What do you think?

We are expecting DC3 and after being really pleased with DS1 and DS2's names we cannot think of a 'perfect' boys name. We tend to have a shortlist and then decide once baby is actually here but I can't even get that far.

As the title suggests I really like Sholto but DH is not sure, I also like Magnus, Miles, and Murdo and DH likes Gregor, Angus, and Fergus but we are both a bit meh on each others choices.

Surname is double barrelled and starts with C

Sounds like the name of a horse to me! Out of your lists I would go for Angus.
So sorry, not much help!

Hopefullyrecovering · 28/04/2012 08:22

I hope you're Scottish!

I like all of your choices, but Sholto will end up spelling his name everywhere he goes.

You seem to like names beginning with M and your DH seems to like names with a hard 'g' in the middle. So how about Mungo?

AhsokaTano · 28/04/2012 08:36

Hopeful, yes, Scottish background and v Scottish surname but living in England.

As I said on another thread I have a Hugh and an Alec and would like something short and not in the top 10.

I could live with DHs choices but I can't really get enthusiastic about them.

As an aside it is amazing how often I have to either spell Hugh's name to other adults or say 'spelt the English way'. I thought it was fairly well known.

I don't like it, sounds like Shogun to me.
What about Duncan? Scots and fab. win win.
Of the rest, all are OK but not Murdo or Fergus
Pick Duncan Grin

PJHarpy · 28/04/2012 09:47

Awful. Just such a try-hard trendster name, sorry.

PJHarpy · 28/04/2012 09:47

Miles is great.

aGog1 · 28/04/2012 10:39

ahsokatano, Hugh spelt the English way as opposed to which other? Just curious as we were forever correcting people with DH's name, which is spelt the Welsh way, when we were living in England.

MarySA · 28/04/2012 10:52

Sholto seems an dreadful name. Angus is by far the best one.

AhsokaTano · 28/04/2012 12:10

aGog, yes as opposed to Huw

I love Sholto! Also Fergus.

pinkyredrose · 28/04/2012 12:16

Sholto is vile. Sorry.

ABigGirlDoneItAndRanAway · 28/04/2012 12:16

Sholto sounds made up, I would go for Murdo or Gregor.

I love Sholto and Murdo.

What about Ivo?

MrsMcEnroe · 28/04/2012 12:25

Well I like the sound of Sholto but I've just Googled it and in Gaelic it means "sower" and in Scottish it means "teal duck" apparently Grin

But frankly OP, if you like it, then go for it.

(I speak as the parent of an extremely unusually-named DS - well, unusual in the UK anyway, although not uncommon in the US - his name doesn't even appear in the OFS figures and I've never seen it in a "What's the most unusual child's name that you've heard recently?" thread on MN!!)

CecilyP · 28/04/2012 12:35

If you like it, go for it! It helps that you are Scottish. Can't see how you would need to spell it - seems pretty phonetic to me.

ellangirl · 28/04/2012 12:48

I know a sholto, though I didn't like it at first it grew on me a lot. Even in Scotland it is very unusual though. I also heard of a Somerled which is even more unusual! I like Gregor and Murdo (or Murdoch). What about Fraser or Drew?

Popsandpip · 28/04/2012 16:06

I know a Sholto. He's about 45. I think it's a great and unusual name. There's no need to go with a more common name if Sholto's the one you like.

AhsokaTano · 28/04/2012 16:24

Guy has also been on the list at various times too. I also like Fraser but wonder whether it might sound as if the child has no first name when coupled with a double barrelled surname?

DH loves Hamish but I irrationally think of it as a dogs name.

Love Sholto. Knew a lovely one growing up (he'd be my age now - just shy of 30).
Malachi? Clem?
Love Fergus. Think Scottish names are the way forward for boys, they are more class-less and have a lovely steadfast feel. DC2 will be Douglas or Dougie if another boy...

NenNen · 28/04/2012 17:04

Love it! I used to have a bit of a crush on a guy called Sholto! Blush

difficultpickle · 28/04/2012 17:09

I imagine it is a name that will lead to a really horrible nickname. On that basis I wouldn't choose it.

TwoIfBySea · 28/04/2012 17:11

If you like the sound of it then what about Sharlto?

upahill · 28/04/2012 17:14

I think it is fine if you are Angelina Jolie Grin
