A sister for Cecilia???? Margaret?

KeyWestK · 25/04/2012 06:42

Hi, DD1 is Cecilia (3yo) and DD2 arriving very soon! (4wks) remains unnamed..

DH pushing hard for Margaret... I was totally against it, but said perhaps I would agree if we went with Margo or Maisie as a nickname. I do not care for Maggie as the nickname but realize she might be called this anyway.

How are people feeling about Margaret these days?

Other considerations have been / are:

Catherine
Claudia
Jane
Fiona (though we are living in the US now and everyone says "Oh like Princess Fiona from Shrek", when I say this name)

Previously considered but discarded by either DH or me were:
Victoria
Louisa
Florence
Cora

Any other names you think go well with Cecilia that we should consider?
Many thanks-

Congratulations!

Firstly Cecilia is a beautiful name and definately on my list if my DC2 is a girl.

I like Margaret and Maggie but can see why you might not. Really dislike Maisie as a NN, though I think Margo is fab!

Of your not disgarded list, I like catherine best, Could be Katie for a NN.

Other suggestions is Elizabeth- shortened to Libby, Beth, Lizzie - so many options and the name is beautiful and classic.

KeyWestK · 25/04/2012 07:10

Hi Gingerbread- thank you! we did consider Elizabeth too, but its DH's sisters name, so he felt strange naming DD2 that (though I said, like you suggested, she could have another NN)

I think Catherine is my second choice too.

Glad you like Cecilia! I was a bit hesitant at first but now really happy we went with it.. though I have had a few people want to call her CeCe as a NN and I always try to (politely) inform them, we call her Celia for short...

I don't think that Maggie is necessarily a given with Margaret, especially if you are already using n alternative shortening (and it does have a lot! other alternatives are Madge, Mae, Marnie, Meg, Meggie, Peg, Peggy, Marge and Midge). I think that in the UK Margaret/Maggie have particular connotations, but I can't imagine that wodul be the case in the US. I really like Elisabeth/Elizabeth too.

My aunt is a Cecilia and her sisters were Camila and Sophia.

KeyWestK · 25/04/2012 07:35

Thanks Nooka, I like Camila and Sophia but unfortunately my closest friends daughter is Camille and I feel like that is too "close" and my first cousin has a Sophia.

Maybe we need to rethink Elizabeth, even if DH sister still around!!

Cecilia is lovely, Margaret, not so although it does have alot of diminutives- including Daisy!

exoticfruits · 25/04/2012 07:48

I like Margaret and particularly Maggie, I think Maggie Thatcher put people off the whole name. Elizabeth is nicer. I like Catherine and Louisa best.

JimbosJetSet · 25/04/2012 07:53

How about Caroline/ Carrie? Or Violet?

belindarose · 25/04/2012 07:56

I really like Cecilia. Victoria is lovely but I don't like Victoria. How about Julia (Or Juliet if you want a different ending)?

KeyWestK · 25/04/2012 08:00

Thanks ladies...hummm daisy is interesting (in a good way)...I can't do Caroline because in real life I always stumble over the Caroline/Carolyn problem. My brain always seems to mix them up. Like Carrie..DH would never agree to Violet unfortunately.

Margaret is a really nice traditional name that goes well with Cecilia (am slightly biased though as my own name is a variant of Margaret in another language).

What about Margot? I've heard it pronounced both with the 't' and without and like the 't' version myself. Or Greta? It's a diminutive of Margaret.

hubbahubster · 25/04/2012 08:08

What about Margot? Fabulous name and goes well with Cecelia I think. Margaret will always be Thatcher to me, I know you're in the US now but I can't get over the association shudders. What if she should pop her clogs this year? People would think you were paying tribute to her...

hubbahubster · 25/04/2012 08:10

X-post!

helpyourself · 25/04/2012 08:15

Greta as a diminutive for Margaret is lovely!

cupcakefairy · 25/04/2012 08:29

What about Marguerite, beautiful version of Margaret I think.. and can still have Meg etc for nn.

cupcakefairy · 25/04/2012 08:31

Ps I also have dc2 due in 4 weeks & Marguerite/Margot are on our list for a girl :)

theverysuccessfulone · 25/04/2012 10:35

Claudia fits the "funny meanings" theme, as Cecilia means "blind" and Claudia mean "limp." But I'm a weird geek and anyway, both names are beautiful.

Like Margaret and Margo as well.

Stellan · 25/04/2012 13:41

I quite Margaret but you don't seem bowled over by it so maybe you ought to keep looking. Sometimes she will get called Margaret and if you don't like it, it'll grate on you. Margo and Maisie are sweet nicknames. You could always name her Margot/Margaux.

I really like Cecilia & Claudia and Cecilia & Fiona as well as Florence, Victoria and Louisa.

You might also like:
Cecilia & Annabel
Cecilia & Charlotte
Cecilia & Eliza
Cecilia & Eloise
Cecilia & Flora
Cecilia & Phoebe
Cecilia & Marina
Cecilia & Matilda
Cecilia & Verena
Cecilia & Violet

BlackSwan · 25/04/2012 14:09

Marguerite?

KeyWestK · 25/04/2012 14:13

Thanks everyone! Hubba too funny, not to be morbid, but you are probably correct...

Greta could be interesting but does it sound German or Swedish to you?

I really like Claudia too but MIL has deemed it TOO "Latin" not that she has the final say.

Never thought of pronouncing Margot with the hard t sound. Will give this some thought...Marguerite is pretty too.

Thanks again!

Margaret is very nice. I like Meg, Megan, Maisie as nicknames, or possibly Rita. Personally I don't like Margot (too much like maggot, especially with a hard "t") Maggie is OK, I do think "Thatcher" but assume will be less the case with the next generation.

I like Catherine, Jane, Victoria, Louisa and Florence, and they'd all go well with Cecilia.

How about

Emily
Frances
Juliet
Georgia
Anna
Harriet
Penelope/Penny
Eloise
Xanthe
Jennifer
Miranda
Olivia

Stellan · 25/04/2012 14:50

Margot is pronounced mar-GO, as is Margaux... Margot sounds too much like maggot!

Janoschi · 25/04/2012 16:55

Margot with the 't' is how it's pronounced in German. Which is why it was reluctantly removed from my list of names for DD! Margo is lovely though.

Meg also really nice.

If you like Grecian names, how about Daphne or Athena? Or if it's the Classical thing, Minerva (nn Minnie) is a nice name?

mathanxiety · 25/04/2012 18:27

I like Margaret and love Greta (sounds as English as Margaret to me, though I know it is Scandinavian or German.)
Another version of Margaret that I really love is Marit (Norwegian I believe).

I don't like Claudia - to my ear it sounds a bit harsh.
Catherine - ver nice. I would spell it with a K to avoid confusion of initials.
Jane - a bit plain
Fiona - I think the Shrek association would be hard to overcome

Victoria
Louisa
Florence
Cora
Of these I like Louisa, but you have already discarded it.
Would you consider Flora? No margarine associations in the US.

A Cecelia I know has a sister Madeleine.

How about:
Cecelia and Beatrice
Cecelia and Felicity
Cecelia and Leonora
Cecelia and Ruth
Cecelia and Melisande
Cecelia and Alice
Cecelia and Constance
Cecelia and Laurel
Cecelia and Helena
Cecelia and Serena
Cecelia and Sabrina
Cecelia and Linnea
Cecelia and Miriam
Cecelia and Anastasia
Cecelia and Antonia
Cecelia and Josephine
Cecelia and Rachel
Cecelia and Naomi

Geranium3 · 25/04/2012 20:28

Eleanor? Eloise? they are both very pretty

forevergreek · 25/04/2012 21:45

Elizabeth nn Eliza
Ophelia
Seraphina
Evangeline
Genevieve
