A sister for Cecilia???? Margaret?

KeyWestK · 25/04/2012 06:42

Hi, DD1 is Cecilia (3yo) and DD2 arriving very soon! (4wks) remains unnamed..

DH pushing hard for Margaret... I was totally against it, but said perhaps I would agree if we went with Margo or Maisie as a nickname. I do not care for Maggie as the nickname but realize she might be called this anyway.

How are people feeling about Margaret these days?

Other considerations have been / are:

Catherine
Claudia
Jane
Fiona (though we are living in the US now and everyone says "Oh like Princess Fiona from Shrek", when I say this name)

Previously considered but discarded by either DH or me were:
Victoria
Louisa
Florence
Cora

Any other names you think go well with Cecilia that we should consider?
Many thanks-

Congratulations. Cecilia is a beautiful fresh classic yet modern name. Margaret is horrible, no where near as nice sounds very outdated and not as fashionable as Cecelia.

Sorry ladies, manic today, just back on. Stellan, BBQ, maths, sausages all great lists. It would be easier if I was married to one of you! Most of the suggestions are ones that I really liked but DH discarded, e.g.

Eliza
Marina
Harriet
Francis
Eloise
Eleanor

As someone pointed out earlier (sorry can't navigate back!) I am not totally sold on Margaret so maybe I need to put some of these in front of DH again and see where we get to....but if we do go the Margaret route there are some good ideas here on NNs and generally not making me feel totally crazy for using it.

Will let you know! Thanks again.

I have a DD Celia. If you go with Margaret you could have Meg as nn- very sweet.

Have you thought about Ursula? or Laura?

CheerfulYank · 26/04/2012 02:38

I am a Meg (short for Megan though) and like my name. Some family call me Meggsie, which is sweet. :) When I taught preschool the little ones called me Teacher Meggie.

I know a little Cecilia whose sister is Evelyn, which I think is nice.

thegreylady · 26/04/2012 17:16

I know a little Margaret called Peggy.
Her dad sings her to sleep with that folk song about 'pretty Peggy-O' which I find very moving. The baby is my cousin's grandchild.

ChocolateIsAFoodGroup · 27/04/2012 02:35

My DD is Margot Elizabeth if that helps any? Probably not Grin

And I am a Victoria Alexandra Smile.

For our upcoming DD we are thinking (only mentioning it cos we seem on a similar naming streak?):

Penelope nn Poppy
Cassandra nn Cassia
Iris
Dahlia
India
Helena

Middle name decided: June.

Pinch away if you like. Ignore also Wink

emmyloo2 · 27/04/2012 04:10

Oooh Margaret is a gorgeous gorgeous name and goes well with your DD's name.

Is Peggy a nn for Margaret, although I do love Maggie as a nickname.

I don't like Claudia or Jane or Fiona but I love Catherine.

Margot, Marguerite are both fabulous, ni fact I am sticking Marguerite on my list....

emmyloo2 · 27/04/2012 04:12

and Chocolate - I love your daughter's name and your suggestions are great. So I might pince them as well. Although India is a little hippy for me....Iris, Penelope and Helena on the other hand are fab!

We have Elizabeth and Alexandra on our list should we ever have a DD

WMDinthekitchen · 27/04/2012 05:18

Margo
Poppy

NapaCab · 27/04/2012 05:41

No, I don't think Greta is particularly German / Scandinavian anymore although that's the origin of it. It's become a mainstream name in its own right - certainly in the US anyway.

Still favoring Margot myself...Grin

Pasiphae · 27/04/2012 12:42

I like Margaret, very pretty. And Greta is fabulous. Maggie is lovely too.

Other nicknames: Pearl since that is the meaning of Margaret.
Daisy because the French Marguerite is the word used to call a Daisy.
Midgie? May? Meg? Greet? Gretel? Gretchen? Rita?

How about Magda/Madgalen? Marjolaine. Marguerite, Margareta, Margreet, Magali?

ChocolateIsAFoodGroup · 27/04/2012 21:17

What do you feel about Magdala? I really liked it, but vetoed as being too out there Grin.

I'm half Polish, so I liked that it was reminiscent of another country as well.....

MustControlFistOfDeath · 27/04/2012 21:28

I like Margaret, esp with Meg as a nn.

Luiza goes well also (although perhaps with the English variant Luisa/Louisa to keep MIL happy Smile )

PJHarpy · 28/04/2012 10:08

Cecilia is beautiful and I love Margaret / Maggie / Meg. too.

I really like Cora and Louisa from your list, as well.

A variant of Margaret? Margeurite is divine. Magdalena is also nice.

Lydia
Marianne
Gwendoline
Harriet
Sylvia
Rosa
Estelle
Constance
Rosalie
Agatha
Anastasia
Georgiana
Corinne
Etta
Helena
Laura
Ursula
Viva

ScatterChasse · 28/04/2012 12:53

Pearl is another one you can use for Margaret.

But if you're not completely sold on Margaret, I'd try and think of some others Smile.

Sylvia, Louisa and Rosa are all quite pretty and (I think, anyway!) would go nicely with Cecilia.

mommybunny · 02/05/2012 12:44

I'm a little late to the table but couldn't resist as I have a DD (5yo) Cecilia Madeline ("Madeline" is the name of my grandmother and a beloved aunt who was dying as Cecilia was born) and an American niece named Margaret who is called Maggie or Mags. I like Margaret but if you're not sold on it don't go for it - you will have to live with it almost as long as she will!

Madeline/Madeleine is kind of similar to Margaret (is one derived from the other? I'm pretty sure Madeline comes from "Magdalene" so I thought they might be related) and could be a good alternative. When Cecilia was born I gave DH 2 choices in the hospital: Cecilia or Rosalind. I wanted something definitely pretty and feminine and "established" but not obvious or overdone. He picked Cecilia. I have been very delighted with our choice, but think I'd have been the same with Rosalind too.

Curious to know how you get on, and good luck!

Love Margaret, and also Margo, obviously Grin. Meg is also a nickname for Margaret and I think it's a lovely name generally. Also like having a song for each name and DD1 has got an obvious one and so DD2 could have Maggie May.

mommybunny · 02/05/2012 14:54

If DD2 were Margaret, she could also have her own Simon & Garfunkel song - "Peggy-O". Someone earlier up mentioned this as an old folk song but I know I have heard S&G do it.

KeyWestK · 08/05/2012 03:09

Hi ladies, sorry just checking back on this. Some more good suggestions here. I like Meg but our surname is a bit along the plain side (think Walker, Williams, Wilson, Wilkins) so thinking Margot Wilkins better than Meg or maggie Wilkins...for example!

Can't do Maggie anyway as that is the name of DD1's lovey / stuffed dog.
Chocolate, like your list but DH would never go for them.

Love PJS and crumpetys teas Jane Austen list and I pushed hard for lydia, Jane or Harriet but got shot down.

With just two weeks to go, I think we are down to Margaret (Margot), Catherine or claudia. With Margaret being the front runner.

Though I have said to DH if we have a third DD she will be Louisa if dd2 is Margaret!!!

Thanks again, will let you know....
