Douglas?

What are your opinions on the name Douglas - is it too dated, too boring and is Dougie a nice nn of too cutesy? We're desperately trying to get this ones name right as with the other two DC we just went with names that we both agreed on rather than loved :(

My first thought was 'no way' but I think it could be a grower. Dougie is quite sweet.

PoppadumPreach · 22/04/2012 22:44

I just love the name - but I have one!

I think it is a v strong, masculine name and I also love Dougie.

Go for it!

mayanna123 · 22/04/2012 22:44

Douglas is lovely.

IndieNile · 22/04/2012 22:51

Douglas - not keen at all, although Dougie isn`t bad.

How about Dougall? Just don`t call his siblings Florence and Zebedee...Grin

WhatwouldGemmado · 22/04/2012 23:09

Yes Douglas is lovely, Dougie or Doug for short. (One in my family too).

BBQJuly · 23/04/2012 00:12

I don't really like it, sorry. It does sound dated/dull to me. But who knows, maybe it is due a comeback!

toobreathless · 23/04/2012 00:37

Personally don't Douglas, it reminds me of an old fat man.

Dougie is ok, not a huge fan of 'ie' names.

Doug is cool.

DaenerysTargaryen · 23/04/2012 00:39

Dougie is super cute :)

BringBack1996 · 23/04/2012 09:42

Definitely don't want to be conjouring up images of middle aged men! I do really love Dougie, but just not sold on the full name. Has anyone used a full name only for the DC then to be solely known by the nn?

Should be for their DC

I know a Dougie who is Douglas on BC and Dougie to everyone/school etc. I like it. Better than being one of 5 Olivers/Alfies.

janie2 · 23/04/2012 10:02

love it!

Bellakins · 23/04/2012 12:09

Love it! This was the name we'd decided on for DC1 but we ended up having a girl. Think Dougie is cute for a wee boy but Douglas or Doug good for an adult.

PercyFilth · 23/04/2012 15:03

Nice name, never been in or out. I had an older in-law named Douglas - everyone called him Doug. Except one person who called him Dougie but he was someone who always had to be different :) mind you, he might very well have been called Dougie when he was little, I wouldn't know.

tunaday · 23/04/2012 16:00

Like Dougie and Doug but not Douglas.

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/04/2012 20:36

What about Dougray as in the delicious Dougray Scott?

BringBack1996 · 23/04/2012 20:55

Dougray would stand out like a sore thumb with the names of our other DC!

Iv gota friend called douglas and gets called dougie and he hates the name. Bit old fashioned

CunningLingo · 23/04/2012 21:17

Nice, not out there but not too common. A winner.

1950sHousewife · 23/04/2012 21:19

Really don't like it because it feels like a Derek/Nigel/Paul name to me. ie the kind of name a senior accounts manager at the local building society might have. Sorry.
But the fact that other people like it is a good thing...

HatchedAtTheHutch · 23/04/2012 21:34

My mum wanted us to call our DS Douglas after the Lurpack butter man! Am sure you'll
understand from this why we gave the name a wide berth! Dougie's quite cute though

Chesticles · 23/04/2012 22:12

I think it's a great name, but I'm biased as I have one! I think it's a very manly name. Love it.

BringBack1996 · 24/04/2012 17:22

So do you think to make Douglas a bit more up to date then a more trendy middle name should be used? We were thinking of having Michael as the middle name but I do think that Douglas Michael sounds a little middle aged. Thoughts?

tummytickler · 24/04/2012 18:42

I adore DOuglas, it has always been on our list, but doesn't fit with our dc names at all.
Youcan't have Douglas Michael though. I just think of Michael Douglas!

1950sHousewife · 24/04/2012 18:48

BringBack - are you joking? I'm with Tummy - it's screaming Romancing the Stone to me.
