Really don't like it sorry. It brings to mind a nerdy 1950's USA college student.

Bluestocking · 21/04/2012 22:21

Pink Floyd. Careful With That Axe, Eugene.

Stellan · 21/04/2012 22:29

It works for Billie Piper and Betty from Mad Men.

Not one for me but if you like it, go ahead and use it. Better than another Tom or Harry or Max - I like to see something different!

MrsAmaretto · 21/04/2012 22:54

Really dislike - I imagine a geeky teenager. Much prefer Ton, Harry or Max!

lisaro · 21/04/2012 23:05

Ugly, ugly, ugly name. It's ugly, as well.

PercyFilth · 22/04/2012 00:10

Gene is OK, but not Euge :o

Pancakeflipper · 22/04/2012 00:12

Skinny, geeky, spotty teen image...

agreetodisagree · 22/04/2012 00:13

Big Brother 6 Blush

Badgerina · 22/04/2012 00:15

The nerd from Grease. American. I usually like "out there" names, but this one is too far out for me, sorry.

BBQJuly · 22/04/2012 00:47

Quite nice in a retro sort of way!

BustersOfDoom · 22/04/2012 00:52

I'm with Badgerina the character from Grease totally put me off this name.

SodoffBaldrick · 22/04/2012 02:10

Yeah, Grease ruined that name for a whole generation....

And Betty's Dad who she named the baby after was an arse, too.

Gene is good, though.

MarySA · 22/04/2012 09:13

I agree with most folk. It's dreadful. Sorry.

MarySA · 22/04/2012 09:14

Didn't mean that to sound too stark! But I'm not keen on this name.

ripsishere · 22/04/2012 09:20

Gene is fine - Hunt and sweet Vincent. Eugene on the other hand is my friends ancient Irish bachelor uncle.
Duncan is a fab name though.

AWomanCalledHorse · 22/04/2012 09:23

I like Gene, Eugene is an odd character on Hey Arnold (awesome cartoon of the late 90s) to me.
Sorry!

Jess850 · 22/04/2012 13:44

I really like it - it was on our shortlist but we chose Dexter in the end.

LondonNadiy · 22/04/2012 13:55

Gene is OK, Eugene is a little on the 'socially maladjusted' side.

my dp loves this name and wanted it each time we had a boy, i said NO NO NO! sorry really dont like it!

BBQJuly · 22/04/2012 14:27

How about Eric?

PercyFilth · 22/04/2012 14:31

TBH I do quite like it. Gene is cool, and if he wasn't keen on that he could be Hugh at a stretch. It's just ... if he did turn out to be a fatso ... they'd call him Huge. Tis a risk!

DonInKillerHeels · 22/04/2012 14:37

Eugene...pretty nerdy and geeky, but actually on the geeky-cool side I think, and Gene rocks as a nickname.

I'd say yes.

Janoschi · 22/04/2012 14:57

I like Gene (actually I love it - it was our list but got a girl!), and Eugene is fine. Better than the myriad Charlie / Harry / Ben type names out there.

I don't really get the need to have a fashionable name at all. Fashions come and go, and choosing something 'cool' and 'on trend' today will probably result in them sounding very Wayne and Sharon-like in 20-30 years.

Pick a name you love. Who cares if it reminds someone of their friend's auntie's dog's best mate? Gene has so many positive namesakes:

Gene Roddenbery
Gene Wilder
Gene Hackman

Yep. Love it.
