Nell is beautiful

Nelly is not!

MitrochondrialEve · 18/04/2012 10:44

I knew an Eleanor with the nickname Nelly - she couldn't abide it.

sooperdooper · 18/04/2012 10:48

I love Nell, I agree you could have one of the longer versions and have Nelly at home but give the option of her using Nell if she wants to :)

blueblizz · 18/04/2012 15:03

Poor child. No other ideas?

Stellan · 18/04/2012 16:50

As a nickname, it works. I think Zoe Ball has a Nellie.

As a given name, not really for me.

hattifattner · 18/04/2012 16:55

I knew a Nelly, full name Petronella. When she got to a certain age, she reinvented herself as Petra.

Nelly is fine for a wee one, not so good for an older girl.

flipflopper · 18/04/2012 17:10

Aw, I think it's cute. I wouldnt use it as a name in it's own right though, it would have to be short for something, as others have said.
I also like Nancy, not sure what that's short for though.

I know dh would never agree to such names though!

crazynanna · 18/04/2012 17:14

When I was a child...we had a neighbour known as 'Smelly Nelly'

sorry Blush it's the only Nelly I know

squoosh · 18/04/2012 17:16

Nelly Oleson. A totes beeatch.

Nell is lovely though/

PrunellaDeVille · 19/04/2012 11:43

i love Nelly/nell - i was an Ellie as a child rather than nelly but i grew up being taunted with ellie (sic) the elephant and it really didn't phase me, it got a bit boring but it was no big deal - every name has something of that sort associated with it

Babylon1 · 19/04/2012 11:49

I'm not keen to be honest :( Sorry x

applepieinthesky · 19/04/2012 20:07

My grandmother's name. I also know a 4 year old called Chanelle but known as Nell. Or what about Nell short for Helena?

Sariska · 19/04/2012 20:16

I have a friend called Nellie. Her real name is Eleanor but no-one ever calls her that. And she has a very serious job.

I like the name.

sleepybump · 19/04/2012 20:20

My 6mo is an Eleanor and has ended up as a Nelly (fulltime nickname) it honestly suits ger completely! I met anotger Eleanor who was called Nelsy as a youngster, she loved it then but grew into her big name in her teens apoarently :)

anychocswilldo · 21/04/2012 19:48

i love Nell and it was one of the name's on my list bloody dh Not so keen on Nelly as people are always gonna hear 'Nelly the elephant' in their head.

WandaDoff · 21/04/2012 20:18

My Gran was a Nelly.

Her proper name was Ellen, but she was always known as Nelly.

Nell is gorgeous! I'd nn for Penelope or Cornelia. Don't do Nelly - its not a pretty name and doesn't look nice - although Nellie is cute, which makes perfect sense in my head Hmm. I don't like Eleanor (but I think that cos the Eleanor in my primary school was a spiteful little twat), but bc Nell or a full, 'proper name'

Ignore what the kids will say in the playground - there is literally no name you can call your child that cannot be picked on by a bunch of imaginative and persistent kids. They will probably be more aware of Nelly the singer than Nellie the Elephant anyway.
